We seek a talented individual to join the Porter Creek Secondary School team . PCSS is a comprehensive school with many hands-on opportunities for students. PCSS displays excellence in Athletics, Arts, and Academics. We are located on the traditional territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council. This position provides the opportunity to join a dynamic, inclusive, staff team dedicated to student success and understands the significance of working with families, our community, and First Nations to deliver on that promise. This .857 FTE Teaching role will involve courses in Anatomy and Physiology 12, Life Sciences 11, and other Science courses based on the strengths of the successful candidate.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated success in planning and coordinating school-based cultural events.
  • Experience developing learning materials and contributing to curriculum development
  • Recent experience teaching First Nations Arts and Culture at the Grade 8-12 level
  • Recent experience in integrating First Nations Ways of knowing, doing and being, as well as experience working with First Nations students.
  • Knowledge and awareness of Yukon First Nations culture, traditional practices, values and beliefs as well as a good understanding of the past and current issues in education, heritage and languages with a view to the future;
  • Teaching experience with the Southern Tutchone language in a school is an asset

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Strong classroom management skills;
  • Ability to adapt and modify curriculum to address students‘ needs and gifts to ensure that all students experience success;
  • Ability to work as a team member and a willingness and enthusiasm to participate in all staff meetings, school wide functions and initiatives, as well as Yukon First Nations Language Teacher professional develpment;
  • Ability to connect and collaborate with school based staff, parents and/or caregivers;
  • Willingness to actively promote Yukon First Nations language and culture within the school programming and environment;

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
  • Yukon Teacher Certification; learn about the certification process
  • Yukon First Nations 101 , to be completed at your first opportunity.
