SOCIAL WORKER - 1.0 FTE Permanent

Learning Services - Special Education

Applications from permanent employees from within the PSSP Bargaining Unit, other permanent Board employees, as well as external applicants will be considered.

Reporting through the Psychology/Social Work Lead to the Superintendent of Learning Services - Special Education, the successful candidate will have specific responsibilities in Learning Services - Special Education. They are further accountable to the Principal of the Social Worker’s designated school(s). The purpose of the position is to inquire into cases of students in crisis, families in need of support and habitual student absenteeism and determine appropriate interventions based on social work assessment.

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) has an opening for 1.0 FTE Permanent Social Worker starting effective September 2, 2025. A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required.

Salary will follow the PSSP collective agreement with a range of $80,641 to $96,070 per annum based on FTE.

Responsibilities

  • A strong commitment to social work values with an understanding of anti-oppressive/anti-racist practice, culturally safe and inclusive approaches to service delivery.
  • Providing comprehensive crisis intervention/tragic events response to students, families and school communities. This also includes providing suicide risk assessments to students.
  • Provide social work intervention/support to students and families
  • Evaluate student and family progress on an ongoing basis and adjust social work intervention plan as necessary
  • Receive and respond to attendance concerns as identified by school Administrators (as per Attendance Counselling Board Procedures)
  • Consult, assess and investigate reasons for student absenteeism
  • Attend and participate in meetings as required
  • Work closely with community agencies and partners to ensure seamless and integrated service delivery for children, youth and their families
  • Remain current on relevant research, best practices, legislation and professional literature
  • Other duties as assigned by the Psychology and Social Work Lead
  • Previous experience as a school-based social worker/attendance counsellor is an asset
  • Travel from site to site to meet the needs of the students, families and schools.



Qualifications

    • Candidate must be registered and in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
    • Must have a Master of Social Work Degree
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team in providing consultation to professionals, teachers, administrators and community
    • Demonstrated assessment and intervention skills to provide direct services to individual students
    • Comprehensive understanding of child and adolescent development and the contributing influences of social, environmental, and cultural family systems that impact students
    • Excellent organizational skills and ability to maintain up to date and accurate documentation in accordance with the Ontario College of Social Worker and Social Service Worker professional Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
    • Knowledge and familiarity of geographical area and service agencies
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Knowledge and experience working with a multi-diverse/multiracial community
    • Knowledge of the Education Act, CYFSA, YCJA, Human Rights and legislation including Provincial attendance policies.
    • Reliable transportation to efficiently attend schools
