Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Registered Nurse to join the Gender Surgery Program at Vancouver General Hospital. Apply today to join our team!

As a Registered Nurse in the Gender Surgery Program you will:

  • Provide nursing care for clients who have undergone gender affirming surgery by working independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Serve as the first point of contact between TransCare BC and primary care providers and clinics, including clinics in the community.
  • Provide comprehensive pre-operative health assessment and post-operative care needs.
  • Develop care plans, education resources, provides basic wound care and follow-up on post-operative healing, liaising with surgeons on any post-operative complications alongside patients, surgeons and social supports.
Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Two years’ recent, related clinical experience in the provision of post-operative surgical care or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult physiology, differences between gender and sex, trans and gender diversity.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and respond to potential complications and care issues related to post-operation and preservation of sexual organs (e.g. wound care; bolster care; compression care; VAC dressing; catheter management; tissue expansion).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of transgender health system in British Columbia and social and historical barriers to care in transgender health.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legislation and government policies and procedures that relate to trans and gender diverse client and their support network.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with clients, families/care givers, community partners, medical staff and members of the multidisciplinary care team.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote person-centered care that demonstrates empathy for patients and families/care givers, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, and patient advocacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement plans of care in relation to client/family priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to counsel and teach clients and their families based on their priorities.
  • Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to operated related equipment including relevant computer applications.
  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
