Job Description:
Primary Purpose
The Lab Instructor will provide leadership for the operation and instruction of Kinesiology Undergraduate and Graduate Laboratory experiences. This includes in-person or, when necessary, remote/virtual instruction of students, development of content, supervision of teaching assistants, co-op students, and volunteers, administration, coordination and delivery of all aspects of the laboratory experience. The Lab Instructor will also serve as a resource to ensure lab content is consistent with current understanding and technology.
Key Accountabilities
Teaching Leadership for Assigned Laboratories (including but not limited to)
· Designs laboratory exercises that develop key learning objectives and applied skills, complement associated lecture course material, and are commensurate with current technology and knowledge base as outlined by the Undergraduate and Graduate committees
· Directs all class instruction for laboratory sections
· Collaborates with course instructors/faculty for laboratory-lecture synchronization
· Develops lab manuals, associated documents, and digital learning materials in support of learning objectives
· Manages the development and delivery of evaluations, assessment criteria, and maintenance of associated grading documents
· Ensures academic integrity is maintained in laboratory experiences
Management of Laboratory Teaching Assistants (included but not limited to)
· Trains, supervises and mentors Teaching Assistants associated with a laboratory. This may include Graduate student Teaching Assistants, Co-op students, practicum students as well as UG student volunteers
· Coordinates and assigns Teaching Assistant duties
· Ensures quality and consistency in laboratory delivery and instruction
· Facilitates evaluations of laboratory experiences
· Facilitates ongoing performance evaluation of Teaching Assistants, providing performance feedback throughout the academic term
Management of Assigned Laboratory Facilities (including but not limited to)
· Maintains technical and safe operation of the laboratories
· Coordinates physical laboratory layouts and ensure maintenance of laboratory facilities
· Facilitates equipment booking and maintenance
· Assists with the maintenance of expendable supplies to ensure full operation of lab experiences
· Working with the Technology group, assesses/reviews emerging technologies in equipment, techniques and teaching tools for integration into laboratory courses
Additional Support for Kinesiology Department Activities
· Provides leadership for activities that support, enhance and complement the undergraduate and graduate programs as required. This may include activities such as tutoring, special events, marketing, practical and theoretical lab development, and independent project supervision.
· Provides leadership and expertise for the design and delivery of Kinesiology outreach and training Programs
· Facilitates equipment training and application advice for undergraduate, graduate and faculty research projects as required
· Facilitates activities related to certification programs
· Participate in committees and other tasks as assigned by the Chair and/or Administrative Officer
Required Qualifications
Education
· Graduate University Degree or equivalent education and experience
Experience
· 2 years post-secondary instructional experience or equivalent
· Demonstrated experience developing and delivering hands on or, when necessary, remote/virtual learning laboratories
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
· Excellent knowledge of UW undergraduate and graduate programs in Kinesiology
· Excellent understanding of basic and applied skills including but not limited to anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, neuroscience, nutrition, human movement assessments and exercise prescription, etc.
· Excellent interpersonal skills to present as a friendly, professional advocate for the department and its activities.
· Excellent listening and verbal communication skills will be required to foster good working relationships with a variety of clients including students, staff and faculty.
· This position will be part of the Kinesiology Department teaching team and thus will be required to operate within a team environment, providing support to others as necessary.
· Excellent organizational skills will be required to prioritize multiple duties and requests and facilitate record keeping.
· Word, Excel, PowerPoint skills - intermediate level
· Excellent on-line/electronic communication skills (e-mail, learning management systems and other social media)
