The School of Pharmacy has received a McKesson Foundation grant to better prepare PharmD students to serve diverse populations and increase access to care in underserved communities in Ontario by enhancing and expanding experiential learning opportunities in Indigenous, northern, rural and remote (INRR) communities. Working closely with key stakeholders, the Experiential Coordinator, INRR will develop and implement a four-year plan to: double the number of co-op placement opportunities in Northern Ontario (from 4-8%); increase the number of rural co-op placements from 2-6%; and, provide 60% of the fourth-year class with placement opportunities in INRR communities (25 in Northern Ontario, 50 in rural areas of Southwestern Ontario).

The Experiential Coordinator, INRR is accountable to the Associate Director, Clinical Education for meeting deliverables related to the following key accountabilities: assess healthcare opportunities for pharmacy students in INRR communities; create and implement a strategy for expansion of co-op and patient care rotation sites and enhancement of existing sites (this includes development of a strategy to support the placement of PharmD students in a culturally safe manner in these communities); develop a strategy that continually assesses the needs of INRR communities and the success of our placements. The first task of the Experiential Coordinator, INRR is to develop a four-year strategic operational plan to accomplish these accountabilities, focusing first on Northern region expansion.

This is a part-time (21 hours per week) temporary remote position. The length of the position is one year, with the potential for up to four years.

Responsibilities

Assess health care opportunities in INRR Communities

  • Conduct environmental scan(s) to identify healthcare needs and areas for pharmacist and pharmacy student health care delivery
  • Connect with individuals and leaders from health care systems and organizations representing INRR communities, Regional Clinical Coordinators, and alumni to gather ideas and feedback
  • Network with existing partners and potential INRR partners, both internal and external
  • Enhance existing partnerships and develop new ones
  • Identify key supporters who are aligned with the our goals and who can network us into these communities
  • Collaborate with NOSMU to identify synergies with respect to health care needs, student support (e.g., housing, orientation) and student recruitment and retention
  • Partner with the UWaterloo Office for Indigenous Relations to support integration of students into indigenous communities and health care delivery
  • Engage UWaterloo Co-operative & Experiential Education (CEE) to identify resources available and share project learnings
  • Network with community organizations/groups identified by partners as key to expansion
  • Other projects as assigned

Develop a strategy for expansion and enhancement of experiential opportunities in INRR communities which includes an orientation program, ongoing assessment, and marketing for students, sites and communities

  • Develop a plan to enhance and expand current experiential offerings for co-op work terms and patient care rotations:
    • ensuring continuity with existing PharmD programming/policy
    • ensuring that the plan meets or exceeds the core set of competencies and broadens students’ exposure to quality professional experiences; meets required national accreditation standards and School of Pharmacy curricular expectations
    • ensuring the plan includes consideration of student, site and regional resource and support needs, implementation of an orientation program, quality improvement activities, report delivery, tracking of deliverables and assessment
  • Design supports in collaboration with external groups that support health care delivery and student experiences
  • Collect information from students who have completed experiential opportunities in these regions, and from the corresponding sites (e.g., Regional Clinical Coordinators) to understand and determine student support needs
  • Research existing INRR orientation programs from UWaterloo Office for Indigenous Relations, NOSMU, and other universities/organizations in Canada, the US and globally
  • Propose, design, implement and assess a flexible student orientation program that may have in-person and virtual components
  • Liaise with key stakeholders on marketing of INRR experiential opportunities to students
  • Support School marketing and communication activities in this area
  • Conduct quality improvement on experiential expansion activities, including collecting feedback from students, pharmacists, and partners regarding successes and challenges
  • Contribute to strategic grant management activities such as report writing and data management
  • Other projects as assigned
Qualifications
  • A degree from an accredited health care program (e.g., pharmacy, nursing, social work)
  • An active professional license is not required
  • Extensive (7-10 years) experience providing health care in one or more INRR communities
  • Familiarity with post-secondary education, including practice-focused teaching experience
  • Familiarity with the challenges and opportunities for students working in INRR communities
  • Broad understanding of, and interest in, current and future pharmacy practice
  • Extensive experience working with interprofessional health care teams
  • Access to a strong network of healthcare institutions and individuals/organizations who support individuals transitioning to live and who live in northern/rural areas an asset
  • High level knowledge of northern and rural health care delivery
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, time-management and organizational skills
  • Extensive experience developing and maintaining relationships and building and working in collaborative environments
  • Demonstrated sound judgment, tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to proactively anticipate challenges and show initiative in resolving issues
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and in teams in a fast-paced environment that demands superior problem-solving capabilities
  • Demonstrated ability to influence with or without authority
