Overview

The Manager, Investments is responsible for administrative management and reporting activities related to the University’s investments, including mandates related to the University’s registered pension plan, endowment, trust funds and expendable funds. The Manager is required to implement, monitor and report on items related to the general administration of the investment mandates and the University’s responsible investment activities, as defined through University policies. The Manager will also work closely with Treasury staff to maximize available returns on cash reserves and cash-equivalent investments, while maintaining sufficient liquidity to meet the University’s operating needs and adhering to institutional risk tolerances.

Responsibilities

Investment Administration

  • Primary day-to-day contact for investment service providers, including investment managers, brokers, performance measurement, and custodial services
  • Manage and maintain accounts with investment services providers, including signing authorities, reporting access, and Know Your Client/compliance submissions
  • Monitor and report on investment performance to Finance Senior Team and in support of reporting to Board subcommittees
  • Review investment portfolios and ensure compliance with University investment policies and risk tolerances
  • Review and recommend updates to investment policies, guidance and procedures
  • Coordinate investment actions, based on Board subcommittee and investment signing authority approvals
  • Complete initial reviews of investment contracts and/or contract amendments, highlighting issues/concerns and making recommendations to the Director, Treasury
  • Manage the preparation of financial statements for the University’s registered pension plan, and act as the primary contact for the annual pension audit
  • Provide recommendations to the Director, Treasury for expendable fund investments
  • Maintain cash flow and investment income analysis related to various investment mandates
  • Manage monthly and year-end investment processes, workbooks, accounting entries and related auditor requests

Responsible Investing

  • Maintain an action plan for the University’s responsible investment activities, compliant with Board subcommittee work plans and University policies
  • Measure and report on carbon metrics within University investment portfolios, and track against University objectives and commitments
  • Engage with consultants, investment managers, businesses and collaboration groups, as necessary, to communicate the University’s commitment to, and positions on, responsible investing
  • Manage the preparation and submission of annual reporting, in line with the University’s membership in the UN Principles for Responsible Investment
  • Work to develop an annual responsible investment report with the intent for public consumption

Endowments

  • Work with the Director, Treasury to set annual expendable rate for the University endowment program
  • Analyze endowment investments to project annual revenues and cash flows, and make recommendations to Senior Finance Team where required to ensure endowment objectives are met
  • Work with the Office of Advancement to ensure appropriate reporting to University endowment donors
  • Manage year-end endowment accounting processes and workbooks, and facilitate related auditor requests

Other

  • Serve on or act as a resource to committees and working groups, as required
  • Participate in and support other department projects, as required
  • Provide backup to other Finance functions, as required
  • Develop productive, collaborative working relationships with colleagues
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement in terms of efficiencies and leveraging financial systems capabilities and new technologies
Qualifications
  • University undergraduate degree preferably in Accounting, Business or Finance
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation from CPA Canada
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) would be an asset
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in an accounting/finance/investment-related environment
  • Minimum 3 years of experience managing/coaching staff and/or providing administrative leadership
  • Demonstrated experience in financial and investment analysis/reporting
  • Previous experience with a significant financial system/ERP preferred
  • Experience in higher education, public sector, or other not-for-profit environment preferred
  • Direct experience in working with financial services providers preferred
  • General knowledge of capital markets and impacting market forces
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals at all levels of an organization
  • Superior ability to communicate technical and financial information and concepts to a broad range of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to work in cross functional teams and strong skills in building and maintaining constructive relationships
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including verbal, listening, written and presentation skills
  • Conceptual thinker with strategic planning skills and initiative
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills
  • Solid analytical ability, judgment and creative thinking skills to solve complex issues including brokering and facilitating effective solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage concurrent deadlines accurately and efficiently
  • Exceptional attention to detail and time management skills
  • Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and their application to not-for profit organizations
  • Works independently with a strong work ethic
  • Strong computer skills including advanced Microsoft tools (i.e. Excel, Teams, and SharePoint)
