General Purpose
Located at the Ontario Dairy Research Centre in Elora, the Systems Analyst II supports the data initiatives in the Agreement between the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA) and the University of Guelph. The Agreement requires the University to increase access and sharing of data to facilitate new agri-food and rural research and data analytics to inform decision-making.
Reporting to the Manager, Research Centre Data, this position will address the growing complexity of research technologies and the need for secure, standardized IT systems, to enhance and centralize IT infrastructure support across the Ontario Agri-Food Research Centres. The incumbent will ensure consistent, expert-level IT service delivery aligned with university-wide strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
- Managing and maintaining IT infrastructure across Ontario Agri-Food Research Centres.
- Providing hands-on support for hardware, software, networking, and server operations to ensure reliable and secure IT service delivery.
- Leading the integration of IoT and research technologies, while supporting researchers in deploying compatible and secure systems.
- Implementing cybersecurity and compliance measures tailored to the unique needs of remote research environments, in alignment with university policies.
- Collaborating with Central IT Services (CCS) to ensure local infrastructure aligns with institutional IT standards, governance frameworks, and strategic initiatives.
Requirements
Requirements of the position include:
- Undergraduate Degree in Computer Science or related field and three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Hands on experience in networking, routers and switches.
- Knowledge of different operating systems and hardware platforms including Microsoft Windows, Apple, and Linux (Ubuntu, Raspberry Pi, and Synology DSM).
- Experience with firewalls, Internet VPN's remote implementation, troubleshooting, and problem resolution.
- Experience working with Docker/Docker-compose, Reverse Proxy, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and Bootstrap.
- Experience with version control systems and collaboration tools (e.g., Git, GitHub, and GitLab), R, and Shiny.
- Strong analytical and problem solving, attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective communication skills.
- Strong project planning and project execution skills are required.
- Able to work in a livestock setting, including dairy, beef, swine, sheep, fish, and/or poultry.
- Class G driver’s license.
