General Purpose

The Residence Learning Communities Manager in Training (RLCMiT) position exists to support students’ development as people, scholars, and citizens in residence. This is an entry level, manager in training position working approximately 35 hours per week with regular evening and weekend work and reports to the Manager, Academic & Living Learning Communities. In this role, the RLCMiT reports to the Manager, Academic & Living Learning Communities, who will provide support and direction to ensure all students in residence have access to programs and supports for their academic endeavours and ensure the Living Learning Communities have well-developed engagement opportunities.

The RLCMiT facilitates the following learning goal for residence life:

A Scholarly Gryphon: Residents will develop the skills to navigate academic demands and resources with support from the campus community. As part of their learning outside of the classroom, residents will persevere and build confidence in their academic abilities. This journey will empower residents to define and achieve their own paths to success with curiosity and purpose.

Duties and Responsibilities

To accomplish this mandate, the RLCMiT is responsible for fostering learning environments and responding to community concerns alongside the Manager, Academic & Living Leaning communities, which specifically entails the following:

  • Supervising approximately 17 academic Residence Life Staff (13 Cluster Leaders and 4 Senior Cluster Leaders) and 5 Residence Assistants - Living Learning Communities (LLCs) to ensure the below programs and activities are developed and executed in an effective manner;

  • Building inclusive, safe, and relational communities where students understand and uphold their rights and responsibilities as members of both Academic Learning Communities and LLC communities;

  • Offering programs based on curriculum with intentional and assessable learning outcomes and support services to help students succeed academically, personally, and interpersonally;

  • Participating in portfolio operations (e.g., hiring, training), under the direction a member of the Residence Life Management Team, to ensure that key functions are executed in a coordinated manner and that staff are hired, trained, and developed according to a set of desired competencies.

This Manager-in-Training position is designed to develop competence in the areas of staff management, residence education and curriculum development, and academic success in Student Affairs. The successful applicant will participate in active goal setting, professional development, and learning with growing scope of responsibility and influence in the second year of the contract. This position is expected to live on campus with housing part of the compensation package.

Requirements

Requirements for this live-in position include: Two (2) year Community College program (university degree preferred) and one (1) year of related experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered. Additional requirements include: demonstrated administrative skills; an understanding of life within a post-secondary institution, working and communicating effectively with students; an understanding of residence living; conflict mediation/resolution; crisis intervention/management; understanding of student development theory and the ability to deal with high stress situations. Candidates must be able to interact with all levels of the university community.
