General Purpose

Located at the Ontario Dairy Research Centre in Elora, the Manager, Research Centre leads the development and management of data systems supporting the Ontario Agri-Food Research Centres. The Manager plays a pivotal role in advancing data architecture and analytics capabilities that support both operational excellence and cutting-edge research. This position is central to fulfilling the data-sharing and innovation goals outlined in the Agreement between the University and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA).

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director, Agri-food Data Strategy, the Manager will design and implement scalable data infrastructure, oversee data integration and automation pipelines, and ensure robust data governance and security. The Manager will collaborate closely with researchers, IT staff, and stakeholders to enable advanced analytics, support research workflows, and maintain compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. The position also includes supervision of a staff member and coordination of strategic data initiatives across the research centres.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, or Agricultural Science with seven years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A PhD is preferred.
  • Proven expertise in designing and managing modern data architectures (data lakes, data warehouses), handling large datasets, ETL pipelines, and automation tools (e.g., Apache Airflow).
  • Proficiency in programming languages (Python, R, SQL, Bash).
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) and data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
  • Familiarity with data governance, cybersecurity, and compliance protocols.
  • Experience supervising staff and managing cross-functional projects.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to align data strategies with research and institutional goals.
  • Able to work in an agricultural setting, including with dairy, beef, swine, sheep, fish, and/or poultry.
