General Purpose

Reporting to the Fitness Program Supervisor, the Fitness Operations Coordinator assists with the daily supervision, administration, equipment operations and personnel related to the Fitness Centre and NRG Zone. They are responsible for overseeing and provisioning the services provided and for the supervision of the part-time staff for these facility spaces and the equipment in the fitness studios.

The Fitness Centre and NRG zone, service over 10,300 members per semester, employ approximately 95 part time staff and generate $1.2M of revenue annually. Supervision of Fitness Centre and NRG Zone is required for over 182 hours per week. It is the responsibility of the Fitness Operations Coordinator to ensure that all its members and staff needs are met in a safe and efficient way. They will be responsible for the hiring and training of Fitness Centre staff, creating schedules and managing the daily administration and operations of the Fitness Centre. Hours will be structured during peak Fitness Centre times to allow the coordinator to provide supervision and direction to student Fitness Centre staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position will be responsible for all equipment maintenance in the Fitness Centre, NRG Zone and NRG class studio spaces to ensure Health and Safety standards are met, and to decrease down time on equipment to avoid service interruptions. The Fitness Operations Coordinator will be responsible for completing weekly, monthly and annual preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, compiling reports and logging equipment maintenance issues to serviced providers and scheduling technicians. Follow-up communication with service providers is necessary weekly with the Fitness Program Supervisor

In addition, this position includes teaching responsibilities in regard to our University of Guelph Department of Athletics Weight Trainer certification course which is required of all staff who work in both the Fitness Centre and the NRG zone. They will also assist the Fitness Program Supervisor with proctoring exams, marking theory exams and performing practical competency evaluations as required for our other certification programs.

The incumbent of this position is required to problem solve any conflicts that arise to the benefit of all participants and ensure that equipment and facilities are safe for participants. Hours will vary according to business flow and program offerings and will vary according to time of year. Hours will be offset with the Fitness Program Supervisor to maximize full-time staff support for as many of our operational hours as possible.

Hours of work will vary according to the time of the year, but will generally be:

8 hours per day, Monday to Friday, scheduled within the time span of 8am-6pm during the months of, May, June, July, and August, 12 pm to 8 pm, Sunday to Thursday, during the months January, February, March, April, September, October, November and December.

Requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must have:

  • Completion of a two year college degree, along with 1 year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience. An undergraduate degree is preferred;
  • Must currently hold Standard First-Aid, CPR, AED and other fitness related certifications;
  • Thorough knowledge of a Supervisor’s responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable regulations;
  • Experience in fitness administration, equipment maintenance, and supervision of staff;
  • Strong leadership and customer service and administration skills;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Student staff centred philosophy;
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development;
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office and database applications;
  • Strong communication, listening, problem solving and conflict resolution skills;
  • Ability to work independently and as a team to effectively to meet established deadlines.
