Assistant or Associate Professor in Medical Oncology

The Department of Clinical Studies, Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in Medical Oncology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

The OVC Mona Campbell Centre for Animal Cancer is a state-of-the-art facility that provides DVM students education and advanced veterinary and graduate training in oncology, diagnosing and treating companion animal patients with cancer using the most current knowledge and cutting-edge technologies. The comprehensive veterinary cancer centre is currently staffed with 3 American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine boarded Veterinary Medical Oncologists, 4 American College of Veterinary Surgeon (ACVS) Diplomates, 3 residents (DVSc), veterinary technicians, radiation therapists, a Clinical Trials Coordinator, a Tumour Banker, and a Clinical Counsellor. The ACC covers 12,000 square feet and includes a Varian Trilogy linear accelerator with on-board imaging (Clinac IX) and Eclipse 3D planning system capable of delivering image-guided intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT).This one-of-a-kind facility is in partnership with the University’s Institute for Comparative Cancer (ICCI) and the Bench-to-Bench Institute for Translational Research (B2B), advancing the understanding of cancer through comparative research. Managing clinical trials and our animal tumor sample bank are specific mechanisms by which the ICCI strives to advance the understanding of cancer and improve treatment options for both companion animal and human cancer patients.

Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree and be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice in Ontario. Preference is given to individuals who are Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology). However, applications from candidates who are eligible for the ACVIM (Oncology) will be considered. Possession of an advanced degree, graduate and undergraduate teaching experience is required. The ideal candidate has a strong background in clinical oncology and outstanding teaching, interpersonal and communication skills. Competency working with others in a collegial team atmosphere is essential. Research of a collaborative or independent nature consistent with the research goals of the Department and College is expected. The successful candidate will have fifty to sixty percent effort dedicated to clinical teaching and service for cancer patients in the OVC Mona Campbell Centre for Animal Cancer. The successful candidate will work with two oncologists to provide didactic and clinical instruction in oncology to DVM students, interns, residents, and graduate students. Provision of clinical teaching to fourth year DVM students, interns, and residents/DVSc students of other disciplines, along with training and mentoring of oncology residents, is expected. The remaining effort is to be spent on professional development and scholarly activity, including research and supervision of graduate students. Research of an independent or collaborative nature is expected.

Other specialty services include emergency medicine and critical care, small and large animal internal medicine, small and large animal surgery, cardiology, neurology, oncology, and anesthesiology.
