Job Description:
Duties:
- OT or PT Clinical externs are OT or PT students who work in collaboration with regulated and unregulated health care professionals in their assigned clinical area
- The clinical extern will practice under direct and/or indirect supervision of the regulated health care professional who has assigned the task
- The regulated healthcare professional must assess the knowledge, skill and judgement of the clinical extern and will provide any necessary training before assigning a specific task
- Clinical externs are not permitted to perform any controlled acts, independently or under delegation (i.e., they are not allowed to perform the controlled act of administering a substance by inhalation or oxygen administration under the delegation of a PT)
- Regulated health care professionals cannot assign interpretation of assessment results, care planning, or discharge planning to a clinical extern
- Clinical Externs will document their activities and patient’s response in the progress notes of the health record
- Patient Care Functions:To be carried out WITH OT, PT, OTA/PTA
- Assist with patient positioning & repositioning (Bed, wheelchair, turning etc.)
- Assist with patient transfers (Bed to chair, mechanical lift, toilet transfer etc.)
- Assist with patient ambulation/use of assistive devices (Ex. Gait aids, splints etc.)
- Assist with treatment intervention (Individual and group based)
- Assist with taking/monitoring vital signs during interventions
- Patient Care Functions: Independent
- Therapeutic activities as assigned by supervising clinician (PT or OT) (Ex. ADLs/IADLs, walking program, wheelchair practice, strengthening, ROM, cognitive activities etc.)
- Transport patients to and from therapy
- Foster a friendly environment for patients through social interaction/leisure activities
- Assist with chart reviews/gather information and report findings to OT or PT to support prioritization and care planning (ex. nurse check-in, review vitals, patient histories etc.)
- Reinforce education provided by PT, OT, OTA/PTA to patient and families
- Administer standardized outcome measures and report results to OT or PT for interpretation
- Unit/Department Duties
- Answer call bells and notify the appropriate member of the care team what is required (Ex. pain medication)
- Therapy specific administrative tasks (ex. inventory, memory books, printing, etc.)
- Equipment
- Assist staff with equipment maintenance checks (ex. w/c, commode, walker, other)
- Cleaning of equipment (ex. equipment used during therapy session)
- Equipment organization (ex. w/c, commode, walker, other)
- Communication
- Liaise with appropriate members of the care team to identify patient care needs
- Reports patient observations to appropriate member of the care team (Ex. changes in skin appearance, comfort or safety factors)
- Document assigned activities and patient’s response in progress notes of the health record
