The Assistant Manager (AM) is responsible for providing effective leadership and support for all operational areas within a high-volume Direct Fulfilment Center (DFC) that will see aggressive growth and development over the next five years.

Reporting to the General Manager, the AM will be responsible for all day to day operational functions which include but are not limited to inbound and outbound operations, order and labour planning and any other additional tasks related to building operations as well as building and associate safety.

The AM will collaborate with the General Manager and all DFC leadership team members to develop and cascade the DFC’s vision mission, and operational strategies to ensure the achievement of all key performance objectives and Service Level Agreements (SLA).

The AM is responsible for building a high-performance work culture that consistently delivers exceptional customer service in a safe and efficient manner. The AM will play a key role in the development and building of a culture that will drive continuous improvement by actively engaging our teams at all levels to identify and implement improvement opportunities in the areas of people, service, and cost.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide support through the evaluation of operational effectiveness. The AM will recommend and implement alternative work methods, procedures, controls and staffing models to achieve accurate and timely movement and processing of product and services.
  • Lead associates to anticipate and solve problems and plan for upcoming events, seasonal changes, etc.
  • Ensure the DFC layout is slotted and configured as such to ensure maximum efficiency as seasonality and flow needs require.
  • Read and interpret operational and financial reporting to determine and monitor problem areas and create action plans to address.
  • Provide recommendations to the General Manager while working with the DC's financial team, operational teams and all people and services related towards the site objectives with continued improvement and efficiency in mind.
  • Will ensure efficient use of operational assets such as warehouse management system(s) and related equipment such as material handling equipment, RF scanners and tablets.
  • Will ensure inventory is received timely and efficiently and flows safely through the DC operation.
  • Coach, train, and develop the management team informally and through formal training programs, providing both informal (e.g. on-floor coaching) and formal (e.g. written evaluation) job performance feedback.
  • Creates and maintains a “great place to work” attitude through open, honest leadership and communication guided by The Home Depots values.
  • Ensure a safe work culture throughout the organization by following Home Depot safety policies and procedures - monitor DC safety, physical security and operational metrics on a daily, weekly and monthly basis; enforces safety policies and procedures; is a safety role model; holds associates to a high safety standard.

Knowledge/Experience Required:

  • Must fulfill minimum time-in-position (1 year) and performance management code requirements (M+).
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Operations Management, Supply Chain, Business or Engineering preferred.
  • PLog or CITT designation would be an asset.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience managing distribution operations preferably in the retail, consumer or electronic commerce sectors.
  • Strong analytical, statistical analysis, problem solving skills and team building skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage large workload, competing demands, and a fast-paced environment
  • Minimum of 3 years Warehouse Management System experience.
  • Experience with SAP ERP and SAP eWMS systems a definite asset.
  • Previous experience with managing one or more new start-up operations a definite asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and working knowledge of Access and Project Management.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts and hours including weekends and holidays.
  • Typically requires overnight travel up to 5% of the time.
