Sonographers daily duties within Sunnybrook’s Echo Lab include: Greeting patients after they have registered at the reception desk. Confirming patient identification using a two patient identifier system. Explaining the procedure to the patient making sure the patient understands the explanation. Instruct the patient in preparation for the test and allow the patient sufficient time to change in privacy. Ensure the patient demographics on the ultrasound machine are correct. Following hand hygiene protocols for each echocardiogram. Performing a thorough echocardiogram as per the echo lab protocols. Set up and administration of agitated saline contrast of Definity contrast if required. Allowing the patient time to clean residual gel and dress post-test procedure. Discharge the patient from the echo lab. Deposit bed sheets and linen in hamper. Clean ultrasound machine probes with Cavi-Wipes. Prepare a preliminary echocardiography report for the reading cardiologist. Teach cardiology residents. At the end of the shift the sonographer is responsible for cleaning the entire ultrasound machine, echo bed and returning all supplies to supply cabinet. Implementation of new ASE guideline documents. Maintain quality patient care. Sonographers are required to maintain their required certifications with the ARDMS or Sonography Canada. Sonographers are expected to be members in good standing with the CMRITO (required to practice sonography in Ontario). Sonographers are required to obtain 30 echocardiography related CME’s within a 3 year period as per Corhealth standard P12. Sonographers are required to obtain 25 medical related CME’s per year as per CMRITO standards.
