Summary of Duties

The Medical Physics Department at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre / Odette Cancer Centre (OCC) in Toronto, Ontario, has an opening for a full time, permanent senior medical physicist. The OCC is a comprehensive cancer centre whose Radiation Treatment Program (RTP) serves over 7000 new patients per year through its external beam (Varian and Elekta linacs, MR-linac, Gamma Knife, orthovoltage) and brachytherapy program (700 patients per year).

 

The Department of Medical Physics seeks candidates for the position of Senior Medical Physicist – Linac Service.  This Senior Medical Physicist spends half time maintaining and improving the integrated operation of the primary treatment planning system, the radiation oncology information system, and the fleet of linacs.  In addition, the Senior Medical Physicist carries out core clinical tasks (commissions devices and software for radiotherapy, develops technical and clinical protocols, contributes to the quality program, reviews treatment plans, and consults on clinical care).  The Senior Medical Physicist provides leadership in clinical, educational, and research activities, and leads transformative change through the development of new devices, the implementation of new technology, improvement of clinical processes.

 

The successful candidate will be required to seek an academic appointment at the University of Toronto's Department of Radiation Oncology (UTDRO), and will participate in UTDRO’s CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics Residency Program and the Radiation Oncology Residency Program. Academic appointments within other departments at the University of Toronto and at Ryerson University are possible. 

 

Qualifications/Skills

Candidates must be qualified medical physicists in Canada with eight years’ experience in a clinical setting.  The preferred candidate will have a PhD in medical physics or a related field with research experience. Candidates must have experience in project management, leading teams, and quality improvement; have a strong peer-reviewed publication record; a record of participation in professional activities; and experience in residency, graduate, or continuing medical education.  Candidates with a record of peer-reviewed or industrial funding are preferred.
