Sunnybrook Research Institute is the research enterprise of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, a teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. Research spans three Toronto-based campuses, eight programs and three scientific platforms. Our main aims are to understand and prevent disease, and to develop treatments that enhance and extend life. Our vision is to invent the future of health care. Each year, we conduct about $100 million in research across 500,000 square feet, including in the world’s first Centre for Research in Image-Guided Therapeutics.

We are seeking a dedicated Research Technician to support our innovative translational research initiatives. The successful candidate will play a key role in

A) Patient identification and recruitment, collaborating with clinicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the implementation of our research projects and

B) Performing various experimental work such as tissue sampling, in-vitro experiments, protein isolation, ELISA test, western blots and additional tests. This role requires a strong background in science or medicine and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

 

Summary of Duties:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Recruitment and Identification:
    • Work with clinical teams to identify and recruit eligible patients for ongoing research projects.
    • Communicate effectively with patients, providing them with clear, concise information about study participation.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in compliance with research ethics and privacy policies.
  • Experimental laboratory  work:
    • Maintain lab equipment and purchasing materials as needed.
    • Perform experimental work designed by the team including sample preparation, measuring protein content, ELISA tests, western blot, RNA and DNA testing,
    • Document all the data and present it as needed in charts, tables and graphs.
  • Project Implementation:
    • Support the creation and dissemination of educational materials for both patients and healthcare providers.
    • Contribute to operational tasks, such as setting up infrastructure, requisitioning equipment, and ensuring standardized workflows.
  • Data Collection and Analysis:
    • Assist with ongoing data collection and quality assurance.
    • Participate in regular steering group meetings to provide feedback and implement Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles.

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Education:
    • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (preferable)  in a relevant field (e.g., biological sciences, medical sciences, etc ) 
  • Experience:
    • Prior experience in laboratory work is strongly preferred. Experience in clinical studies is welcomed.
  • Skills:
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with patients and healthcare providers.
    • Performance of common experimental lab work
    • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and electronic medical records (EMRs).
  • Other Requirements:
    • Some flexibility in work hours to accommodate program and patient needs.
    • Knowledge of research ethics, including informed consent processes and patient confidentiality protocols.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with education material development (e.g., infographics, videos).
