Position Summary
The Palliative Medicine Research Group, housed within the Division of Palliative Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, is dedicated to improving the quality of life of people experiencing serious illness through rigorous, novel, and equitable research. They will collaborate with palliative care clinicians and investigators to support the completion of research projects according to regulatory and institutional guidelines and requirements.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a health sciences discipline, Master’s degree an asset.
- ³2 years of experience in research coordination, and
- Experience in clinical research.
Skills and Qualifications
- A good understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
- Experience with conducting reviews of research literature.
- Experience with submitting grant applications is an asset.
- A good understanding of research ethics (e.g., informed consent process), the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), and the Tri-Council Policy Statement about Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS2).
- Proficiency with data collection, management, and analysis.
- Experience with composing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and abstracts for presentation at conferences, and with preparing posters and oral presentations for conferences is an asset.
- Ability to work cooperatively and transparently as a member of a multi-disciplinary team of clinical, research, and administrative staff.
- Ability to work independently with limited oversight and work flexibly on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to take initiative, troubleshoot independently, and adapt to circumstances.
- Excellent skills in written and oral communication and organization.
- Proficiency with computer software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word), survey platforms (e.g., REDCap), analytical programs (e.g., SAS, NVivo), and management software (e.g., Zotero) are assets.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee and coordinate all aspects of multiple projects simultaneously under the direction of palliative medicine clinicians and investigators.
- Critically appraise and summarize research literature.
- Develop protocols to submit to granting agencies and the Research Ethics Board, and to guide the completion of projects.
- Coordinate the submission of grant applications.
- Develop informed consent forms to submit to the Research Ethics Board and to obtain consent from potential participants.
- Develop budgets for projects and manage funds to ensure projects remain on budget.
- Coordinate the submission of Research Ethics Board applications, including subsequent amendments and renewals.
- Recruit and consent individuals for projects.
- Collect and manage data (e.g., from existing databases, retrospective chart reviews, interviews, surveys).
- Clean and analyze data, including preparing demographic data tables and statistics for manuscripts and abstracts.
- Preparation manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and abstracts (posters and oral presentations) for presentation at conferences.
- Coordinate and participate in meetings, prepare meeting materials, and take meeting notes.
