Summary of Duties:

The Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program and the Division of Neurosurgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre seek a dynamic, certified Physician Assistant (PA) to join our interprofessional team. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative patient-centred environment and play an integral role in the assessment, management, and coordination of care for patients with neurovascular conditions in the outpatient setting.

 

Working under established medical directives and the supervision of Physicians, and reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the successful applicant will support the delivery of high-quality clinical care, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and contribute to the ongoing development of the neurovascular outpatient program.

 

The roles and responsibilities of the successful applicant include, but are not limited to:

  • Obtain comprehensive health histories, including patient demographics, chief complaints, history of present illness, past medical and surgical history, medications, allergies, family history, and relevant psychosocial information.
  • Conduct comprehensive and focused physical assessments and interpret findings to formulate differential diagnoses and determine appropriate investigations and management plans. 
  • Order, perform, and provide preliminary interpretation of diagnostic investigations and laboratory tests within the PA scope of practice and applicable medical directives.
  • Evaluate, screen, counsel, educate and communicate effectively with patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, risk-factor modification, expected outcomes, and ongoing care requirements
  • Facilitate patient navigation through the healthcare system by coordinating referrals to specialty services, community resources, and allied health professionals as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively within a larger team of Physician Assistants and Advanced Practice Providers, providing back-up support and cross-coverage as required across clinical areas.

Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and program evaluation initiatives, including tracking and monitoring key performance indicators to demonstrate the impact of the role.

 

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Successful completion of National Certification Exam administered by the Physician Assistant Council of Canada (PACC) or certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Membership with the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA).
  • Minimum one year of related clinical experience (e.g. outpatient neurosurgery, inpatient neurosurgery/trauma/general surgery) preferred.
  • Current ACLS certification required; ATLS certification preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment, judgment and decision-making skills in complex clinical settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within an interprofessional healthcare environment.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven conflict resolution, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining effective collaboration with physicians and members of the interprofessional healthcare team.
