Occupational Therapist - Priority Coverage - Temporary Full-Time - 2025-13951

Sunnybrook has an exciting opportunity for an experienced occupational therapist to work full-time in the Acute Care Priority Coverage role for approximately 18 months. The Priority Coverage OT will receive referrals each weekday from unit-based OTs for patients who are ready for discharge and transition across clinical settings, including the Integrated Community, Tory Trauma, Schulich Heart, and Odette Oncology Programs. This role also provides coverage to surgical areas, based on presenting needs of patients. As a full-time acute care team member, the Priority Coverage OT will also fulfill weekend rotations, as per schedule.

 

Summary of Duties

  • Collaborate with patients and family to assess patient functioning to improve and optimize safety in occupational performance
  • As part of interprofessional team, provide person-centred assessments and interventions, including recommendations for follow-up [i.e. home,  community or rehabilitation]
  • Actively participate in interprofessional team activities such as team meetings, clinical rounds, team huddles and quality improvement initiatives
  • Act as an occupational therapy expert resource for staff, students, and other healthcare providers
  • Maintain and upgrade knowledge and skills through continuing education and professional development
  • Seek opportunities for involvement in practice-based research and engage in knowledge translation through evidence-based practice and implementing best practices
  • In support of Sunnybrook’s full affiliation with the University of Toronto, participate in teaching occupational therapy students on an ongoing basis including acting as a preceptor for fieldwork placements; supervision of one or two student placements annually is expected.
  • Practice in accordance with regulatory body (COTO) standards for practice

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario required
  • Membership and insurance with one of CAOT or OSOT required
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience required, with preference for an OT who has experience in acute care
  • Experience working with patients who present with complex health issues and adept at discharge or transition planning
  • Strong cognitive assessment experience required
  • Ability to efficiently complete assessments of a patient’s occupational performance issues (ADLs and IADLS, cognition and perception, functional mobility, psychosocial and mental health, home safety, and need for equipment/aides to optimize independence) for the purpose of timely and effective hospital discharges
  • Good working knowledge and ability to use referral systems such as RM&R
  • Working knowledge of community-based services
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills to work in a team environment
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills

  • Ability to demonstrate reflective practice
