The Medical Laboratory Assistant plays an integral role in the laboratory by providing support services to ensure quality patient care.   This includes the following: •    Specimen handling -receiving, sorting, labelling and distributing specimens to work stations, •    Updating patient information, filing and retrieving records, verifying and registering patient demographics, answering phone calls •    Performing routine technical procedures •    Providing customer service assistance to address issues with patients, referring offices and internal departments •    Performing venipuncture and ECG on inpatients and outpatients  •    Practices and provides patient-centred care •    Facilitating procurement of miscellaneous specimens •    Arranges for the transport of the specimens to the laboratory  •    Maintains required inventory and forms, maintains work areas •    Practices in a safe manner, maintains a safe working environment and complies with IP&C policies •    Collects and documents workload statistics and files safety reports as required •    Collects and organizes documents as required •    Participates in CQI initiatives and assists in training of staff •    Participates in On-call duties •    Performs other duties as required   Qualifications/Skills: •    Successful completion of Community College program for Medical Laboratory Technician (must include Phlebotomy and ECG) •    MLPAO (previously known as OSMT) certification required •    CSMLS MLA certification an asset •    Minimum one (1) year recent experience in venipuncture required •    Proficient computer skills required including MS OFFICE-EXCEL, Word •    Knowledge of registration of microbiology samples preferred •    Lab automation experience preferred •    Previous experience with Sunquest Laboratory Information System and electronic Positive Patient Identification (ePPID) such as Sunquest Collection Manager preferred •    Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to follow departmental procedures •    Ability to understand and apply information to new situations.  •    Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills •    Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively •    Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and adjust to varying work assignments as needed, or work independently, as required •    Ability to work safely and accurately in a fast paced environment and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner  •    Demonstrated satisfactory work performance, punctuality and attendance records •    All applicants will be subject to a practical assessment.
