Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is a major academic health facility affiliated with the University of Toronto, training 5,000 student learners from over thirty health disciplines including 1,300 residents and fellows per year. We are one of the largest referral centres in Ontario for solid tumor and malignant hematology NGS testing and for pharmacogenetic testing. We invite applications for an Academic Clinical Laboratory Scientist with expertise in molecular genetics, tumor genomic profiling and hereditary cancer genetic disorders. We seek candidates with CCMG and/or ABMGG certification in molecular genetics, genetic and genomic diagnostics, or laboratory genetics and genomics.

 

The successful candidate will hold an academic appointment in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at University of Toronto with rank commensurate with qualifications.

Summary of Duties

  • Interpreting and reporting of clinical molecular genetic test results for oncology and inherited diseases
  • Works with the Molecular Diagnostic technical team and reports to the Medical Lead of Molecular Diagnostics
  • Leading new genetic and molecular assay development, validation and implementation including making recommendations regarding methodology and equipment for testing through remaining current on medical scientific literature
  • Developing laboratory genetics and genomics curriculum, and teaching residents and fellows (i.e., from Pathology, Genetics, Hematology programs), Medical Laboratory Technologists, and students from Michener Institute or other educational organization.
  • Attending, discussing and presenting difficult / challenging / interesting / quality-related findings at intradepartmental Molecular meetings
  • Monitoring and participating in proficiency testing, QC and QA activities, in compliance with Accreditation Canada Molecular Diagnostics requirement
  • Collaborating with basic scientists and clinical colleagues in research efforts related to Molecular Diagnostics and Genomics
  • Remaining active in professional organizations and participating in departmental / hospital / and /or external committees (local / regional / provincial / national / international)

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Molecular Scientist (PhD) with board certified or eligible for Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (CCMG) +/- Americal College of Medical Genetics (ABMG) designations in Molecular Genetics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics (LGG)
  • Experience interpreting and in clinical reporting of NGS assays
  • Experience in implementing comprehensive genomic profiling in oncology is preferred
  • Knowledge of both short and long-read high-throughput sequencing platforms
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with individuals at all levels
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
