Job Description:

Are you an experienced media relations and public relations professional with a nose for news who can generate news stories and social post ideas, tackle corporate disclosure activities, craft stories and proactively pitch media ideas? If so, this role is for you.

You will help plan and implement media relations and social media activities for the Office of the CEO, manage communications requirements for corporate disclosure activities and proactively develop key messages connected to industry and policy topics affecting Sun Life, including those related to issues and reputation management.

What will you do?

  • Media relations

    • Provide advice and support to senior leaders in preparation for media interviews and external events - including preparation of briefing documents, news releases, key messages and speaking notes, plus analyzing current headlines and trending topics for issues management and prep.

    • Triage and manage requests from members of the media.

    • Proactively build relationships with key outlets and reporters.

  • Build CEO profile & tell Sun Life’s story

    • Manage and execute external communications plans for Sun Life’s CEO - including proactive media relations, social media and external profile building.

    • Proactively promote Sun Life’s story and narrative, including executive profiles, Sun Life’s results, outcomes and strategic initiatives.

    • Create content easily adapting tone and personality to shift between writing spokesperson message points, to informational web and social communications.

  • Corporate disclosure communications

    • Work closely with Legal, Investor Relations and Finance to manage corporate disclosure activities including Earnings News Releases, media requirements around Quarterly Results, external Board announcements, Annual Meeting and Investor Relations media announcements.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Minimum 7 to 10 years experience in media relations/public relations/journalism

  • Exceptional written and storytelling communications skills including editing, proofreading and attention to detail

  • Proactive media relations professional with a creative approach, commitment to excellence and ability to confidently counsel senior leaders on media relations and social media

  • Understanding of media, including social media, and multiple audiences - network of relationships across media and influencers

  • Strong relationship building skills and ability to maneuver multi-stakeholder teams

  • Strong time management skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and produce materials to meet tight deadlines

  • Post-secondary education in related field (communications, journalism, public relations)

Assets:

  • Financial Services experience and/or experience working for a publicly traded company and/or global organization

  • Policy experience

  • Bilingualism is an asset

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
