Job Description:

About the role:
In this contract role, you will collaborate with internal litigation counsel and law clerks. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting a portfolio of litigation matters, including disability, life insurance and investment related actions.
What will you do?
- Assist with a large portfolio of disability, life insurance and investment related actions as part of an internal litigation team.
- Request and organize claim files.
- Serve pleadings, affidavits of documents, mediation briefs, pretrial memoranda, motion materials, and obtaining documents from internal Sun Life clients and from plaintiffs' counsel.
- Update and maintain electronic records on various Sun Life systems and keeping internal clients apprised of the developments on files.
- Oversee the electronic filing of documentation, correspondence and emails in a largely paperless environment and dealing with external counsel in other provinces
- Arrange for payment of various invoices relating to defence medicals, surveillance, and mediations.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of the Ontario Rules of Civil Procedure and a general understanding of Sun Life's products and practices.
What do you need to succeed?
- A minimum of 5 years’ work experience as a litigation assistant (experience with the defence of life and disability insurance claim litigation and/or accident benefits income replacement litigation would be an asset).
- An understanding of Ontario’s Rules of Civil Procedure, especially with respect to the form, timeline and proof-of-service requirements for pleadings, motion materials, pretrial conference memoranda, orders and the like.
- A litigation assistant diploma or equivalent.
- Attention to detail, dependability and a commitment to producing a high-quality work product.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with internal clients and business partners, as well as external parties (law firms, opposing counsel and staff, etc.).
- Decisiveness and an ability to carry out legal assistant responsibilities with minimal direction/supervision, working proactively and collaboratively within a team environment consisting of lawyers, law clerks and legal assistants.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a large volume of tasks; an ability to appropriately prioritize and follow-up, and to adapt to changing priorities.
- Strong technological aptitude including command of Microsoft Office or similar software and a good general ability to learn, adapt and execute on evolving IT, data management and reporting needs.
- As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only as the position includes managing both French and English-speaking staff (Quebec and outside Quebec) and providing daily support to the team.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong knowledge of Adobe Pro, matter management and document management software would be a definite advantage.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.
