Job Description:

Role Summary

We are looking for an energetic, strategic and results oriented candidate to lead the Group Benefits Underwriting team in Western Canada. The Director, Group Underwriting, Western Region is accountable for enabling the achievement of excellent customer service, enhanced productivity, sustained and exceptional quality, target financial results and appropriate risk management. The highly skilled team of 40 underwriters based in Western Canada is responsible for establishing and managing customer focused financial solutions for new and existing group benefit programs representing a diverse range of clients by size, industry and funding arrangements.

What will you do?

  • Build and maintain an inclusive work environment that is focused on delivering internal and external client satisfaction and business results through teamwork and innovation

  • Engage and develop underwriting managers and underwriters through individual and group mentoring and by providing opportunity and support for career development

  • Implement and manage financial strategies and data driven solutions that satisfy growth and earnings targets

  • Ensure appropriate risk assumptions, pricing and underwriting judgement are employed in setting prices and making risk decisions

  • Ensure underwriting policies, practices and guidelines are successfully communicated and adhered to

  • Monitor financial results against target and identify action plans to address any gaps

  • Seek opportunities to enhance operations and service levels through the analysis of key performance metrics and the growth of a continuous improvement culture

  • Provide advice and expertise on financial/underwriting issues to key business partners including Sun Life Health leadership, business development directors, account executives and disability directors

  • Work collaboratively with internal partners in Finance and Business Development to optimize strategic decisions and drive value for our clients

  • Contribute to the strategic direction of Group Underwriting as a member of the Group Underwriting Leadership team

What do you need to succeed?


Competencies:

  • Undergraduate degree in analytical discipline

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with group underwriting, pricing and risk assessment practices and techniques

  • Ability to make case specific and block based financial decisions that balance market expectations with company growth and profit expectations

  • Knowledge of group benefits products, contracts and operating systems

  • Ability to clearly articulate complex group benefit pricing and financial concepts

  • Strong leadership and influence skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Strong people development capability

  • Results oriented

  • Innovative and creative thinker; willing to challenge the status quo

Assets:

  • Actuarial Designation

  • Experience with predictive modelling/advanced analytics.

  • Experience with Tableau or other data visualization tools.

  • Experience working in an Agile environment.

  • Experience in a digital organization.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
