SD8 serves families in a spectacular, biodiverse region that includes a portion of the West and East Kootenays in southeastern B.C. Its six families of schools are situated across 15,000 square kilometers of rivers, valleys, lakes, and three mountain ranges, connected by two main municipalities-the Town of Creston and the City of Nelson-with the villages of Slocan, Kaslo, Salmo and many smaller, rural communities dotted in between. The School Board Office is located in Nelson, B.C. Our schools are dispersed geographically and range in size and composition:

- an extensive array of program options, including Aboriginal Education, Late French Immersion, Outdoor Programs, and a strong International Program.



Salary Range; $63,367 - $111,488 per year, in accordance with the current SD8-Kootenay Lake / KLTF Collective Agreement. Placement on the salary grid is based on qualifications and years of teaching experience as evaluated by the BC Teacher Qualification Service (TQS).



Job Description & Requirements



The English Language Learner Teacher is an itinerant teacher, working under the direction of the District Principal Inclusive Education or designate. The English Language Learner Teacher works collaboratively with district and school staff in building capacity to support English language learning in the classroom for Ministry of Education and Child Care funded English language learners. This position requires an enthusiastic, motivated, experienced and dedicated educator.



Schedule:

Minimum work schedule is from 8:00 am - 4:00 p.m on Tuesdays of each week. Due to district travel, meetings, and work commitments, schedule adjustments will arise and will be determined by the supervisor or designate. Travel throughout the district is required, often in winter conditions and in mountain locations.

Qualifications:

1. Professional teaching certificate as recognized by the BC Ministry of Education.

2. Preferred possession of a Master’s in English Language Learning, or a related discipline.

3. Exemplary teaching record with at least five years’ experience.

4. Extensive training and background in ELL education.

5. Sound demonstrated use of formative and summative assessment strategies.

6. Exemplary interpersonal, organizational and consultation skills.

7. Possession of a current valid BC Driver’s License.



Specific Additional Qualifications:

An advanced certificate (TESOL or equivalent) and/or a combination of specialized advanced relevant university-level graduate coursework and experience teaching English Language Learners that demonstrate the following:

Methodology and appropriate approaches for teaching ELL

Applied linguistics

First and second/additional language acquisition/learning

Language assessment/testing theory and practice

Cross-cultural communication, understandings, sensitivity, and strategies

Multicultural studies

Adapting instruction to meet the diverse language needs of students



In addition, the following experiences are preferred:


Experience living in another culture for a period of time,

Participating in cross-cultural communication opportunities

Learning an additional language (long-term study)

Demonstrated experience of sustained efforts to bridge cultural gaps



Reporting structure:

The District English Language Learner itinerant teacher reports to the District Principal, Inclusive Education or designate.
