The Opportunity

RVS invites applications for a continuing, full-time (35 hrs/wk) Student Mental Health Capacity Building Coordinator position to work the 10-month school calendar schedule starting immediately.

This position will report to the Director of Learning Supports and designate. Under the direction of the Learning Supports leadership team and in collaboration with the Mental Health Capacity Building Team Lead, the Student Mental Health Capacity Building Coordinator will provide leadership, coordination and implementation of identified mental health capacity building programming currently operating in Rocky View Schools (RVS).

The Student Mental Health Capacity Building Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating services to meet mental health program goals, the delivery of professional learning, and acts as a key member of the divisional crisis/incident response team.

The successful candidate will have a valid Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operators License and access to a reliable vehicle as travel is required.

Responsibilities Include

  • Develop, organize and facilitate the delivery of mental health promotion and prevention programs for students, their families and employees
  • Establish and manage a cadence of accountability and role mandates to ensure students’ needs are met in line with RVS’ framework of inclusion, and without duplicating services
  • Lead, support and provide professional learning opportunities related to mental health for employees, as well as learning sessions for parents/guardians.
  • Work as part of the learning supports branch crisis and incident response team by actively engaging in assessment of risk to others, violent threat risk assessments through RVS processes and protocols
  • Support identified school teams and employees with coordinated incident responses related to, but not limited to, mental health, trauma, grief, suicidal ideation, etc.
  • Explore, develop and support partnerships with community groups and services to extend current programs and services
  • Research, compile and maintain data and reports results of identified measures and goals
  • Liaise and communicate regularly with various external groups of the community including government ministries and agencies, contracted services, students and their families, health agencies and community partners
  • Collaborate with other divisional staff in creating accessible, engaging and authentic learning opportunities for students

Education/Experience

  • Master’s in counselling, counselling psychology, Social Work or related field
  • 5+ years experience within a school division and/or public education setting
  • Formal training in Violent Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA), Traumatic Events Systems (TES), PREPaRE or Neuro-sequential Model in Therapeutics or Education is considered an asset
  • Comfortable working with staff and students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in inclusive education settings
  • Familiarity with Rocky View Schools(RVS) Practice Guides, Board Strategic Plan, Divisional Education Plan
  • Understanding of the policies and procedures that guide teaching and learning (Provincial and jurisdictional)
  • An equivalent combination of Education and Experience may be considered

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision within defined responsibilities
  • Thorough knowledge of community resources, agencies (including non-profit), and RVS mandates and referral processes
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively and calmly in crisis or incident response
  • Demonstrated skill and ability de-escalating children, youth and adults in highly stressful situations or heightened emotional states
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge working and planning collaboratively with a broad range of personnel and agencies
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge in relationship building, capacity building and creative problem solving
  • Ability to facilitate and/or provide professional learning opportunities
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Knowledge and comfort with adolescents and their developmental needs and issues
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and web-based applications
