The Opportunity
Rocky View Schools invites applications for a continuing, full-time (40 hrs/wk) Landscape Maintenance Specialist position starting immediately at the Education Centre located in Airdrie, Alberta.
The Landscape Maintenance Specialist is responsible for organizing, supervising, and performing tasks related to the maintenance and improvement of school grounds and play areas within Rocky View Schools.
Responsibilities
- Ensures RVS grounds are maintained to RVS standards including playgrounds, parking lots, tree and shrub care, sports fields, snow removal, turf are, outdoor classrooms, portables and amenities
- Performs inspections of grounds and equipment, performing timely repairs as required
- Maintains and operates designated irrigation systems ensuring spring start up and fall shut down are completed
- Directs, supervises, and evaluates Summer Grounds employees in their day-today duties
- Participates in planning and installation regarding projects
- Operates mechanical and hand powered snow and ice control, and turf and plant healthcare equipment
- Conducts playground inspections and ensures timely repairs
- Acts as designate for the Manager of Grounds as assigned
- Conducts daily site hazard assessments, correcting unsafe conditions and following RVS hazard reporting procedures to ensure the safety of RVS staff and visitors
Education/Experience
- Landscape Gardener Journeyperson Certification, Diploma in Horticulture or related education
- Two or more years’ experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, and safe operation of commercial equipment
- Demonstrated supervisory experience providing leadership to a crew with varied levels of experience
- Previous experience maintaining repairing irrigation systems is considered an asset
- Certification in Pesticide Application, Arboriculture, Playground Inspection, Irrigation, Turfgrass
- Ability to operate and transport commercial landscape equipment including tow trailers
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and web-based applications
- Management, Landscape Construction and/or Horticulture Technology is considered an asset
- An equivalent combination of Education and Experience may be considered

Work Environment
- Must be available to work during peak periods within the year including extended hours and snow events as assigned
- Ability to perform physical requirements associated with grounds care, including repeated bending, walking, stretching, and lifting in various weather conditions
- The role may require lifting up to 50lbs on an occasional basis
Pre-Employment Requirements
- The successful candidate must submit a current Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Check within 30 days of the start of your employment
- Proof of qualifications/education as required by the position
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle License and driver’s abstract satisfactory to RVS standards as it applies to the role
- Understands and complies with all legal requirements for safety and health, as they pertain to the workplace
- Reports hazardous conditions inside and outside the division to ensure the safety of RVS staff and visitors
- Completes all online modules pertaining to occupational health and safety
