The Opportunity
RVS invites applications for a continuing, full-time (35 hrs/wk) Financial Analyst position starting immediately at the Education Centre located in Airdrie, Alberta. The Financial Analyst is responsible for all technical and analytical accounting processes related to the preparation and completion of the annual budget, and financial reporting of Rocky View Schools (RVS). The Financial Analyst monitors internal control compliance and proposes best practices while overseeing and maintaining various project accounts and internal databases and applying accounting principles to analyze financial information.
Responsibilities Include- Maintains and oversees general ledger accounts and various internal databases to ensure data integrity and accuracy
- Guides RVS staff regarding RVS financial policy, procedure, financial budgeting, accounting, and software related queries
- Monitors and recommends best practices for financial internal control compliance
- Assists in developing and maintaining key working relationships with RVS staff and communicates to ensure dissemination of information to all necessary parties
- Assists with the review and approval of source information to relevant software, including but not limited to accounts payable batches and journal entries in a timely fashion
- Maintains the integrity of the general ledger account structure
- Analyzes financial and budget information, investigates variances, and proposes correcting
- adjustments to ensure accuracy of data on a timely basis
- Prepares annual, monthly and quarterly budget and financial reporting/analysis
- Performs research to ensure proper accounting treatment and disclosure in accordance with industry standard
- Responds to information requests from internal and external parties including auditors, Canada Revenue Agency, and Alberta Education
- Prepares, analyzes, and explains financial information to end users to enhance financial literacy and efficacy of RVS staff related to financial processes
- Tracks capital projects, liaising with the Director of Facility Planning and Supervisor of Maintenance and Grounds and Alberta Infrastructure
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration or a related field
- Current CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) designation or equivalent
- 3 - 5 years of accounting and financial reporting experience
- Previous experience within a school division would be considered an asset
- Previous financial audit experience is considered an asset
Knowledge and Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of Accounting Standards (e.g. PSAS, NFP, IFRS)
- Knowledge and experience in various accounting software systems
- Effective organization, prioritization, time-management, and problem-solving skills
- Outstanding verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to successfully work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision
- Proven ability to establish collaborative working relationships with internal and external clients
- Professional skepticism and awareness of the potential for fraud and diligence in following prescribed procedures, policies and goals of the department
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 and web-based applications
