Senior Driver Instructor - Full-Time 1.0 FTE

Reports To: Transportation Manager

Department: Transportation Services

Location: RDCRS Transportation Department

The position of Senior Driver Instructor (SDI) is established to provide comprehensive classroom and behind-the-wheel training, ensure compliance with Alberta Transportation safety procedures and regulations, and maintain “Driving Training School” status. The SDI is responsible for the evaluation, certification support, and development of school bus drivers. This role supports RDCRS in ensuring the safe transportation of students while meeting operational, regulatory, and documentation requirements.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Training and Instruction

  • Conducts Class 2 curriculum in both classroom and in-vehicle settings for driver certification.
  • Delivers S-Endorsement training and ongoing driver development.
  • Oversees and mentors all driver trainers; acts as first point of contact for trainer-related matters.
  • Conducts practice road tests and readiness evaluations prior to official road tests.
  • Maintains and updates training packages and shared Google Drive resources.
  • Organizes and leads quarterly Trainer Meetings.
  • Drives school busses when required to support operational needs.
Compliance and Documentation

  • Assists with the annual submissions to Alberta Transportation to maintain Driving School License and register training buses.
  • Submits all necessary documentation for Driving Instructor license renewals.
  • Tracks, audits, and maintains driver files and Hours of Service logs.
  • Maintains all records related to training, certifications, incident reports, and evaluations.
  • Enters all accidents, incidents, and red light fly-bys in the RISC system.
  • Prepares various documentation and reports for audits and safety evaluations.

Safety and Incident Management

  • Attenda safety meetings and implements Alberta Transportation updates.
  • Provides remedial training following driver incidents/accidents.
  • Assists with video retrievals for schools, law enforcement, and red light camera incidents.
  • Rides along with drivers to observe performance and support development.
  • Assists with areas of concern and provide driving assessments.
  • Participates in OH&S as a standing committee member and Secretary.
  • Oversees SDS protocols, labels, and documentation for shop safety.
  • Creates and updates Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs) for shop personnel.
  • Maintains and posts Safety Board information; ensures building inspections are complete.

Administrative and Support Functions

  • Completes training paperwork grant forms for new hires.
  • Schedules and books online road tests.
  • Administers and tracks all Hour Zero and Works online training compliance.
  • Assists with preparation of the monthly Transportation Newsletter.
  • Participates in weekend on-call rotation and provides operational support as needed.



Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3) tears experience as a School Bus Driver.
  • Current S-Endorsement and Train-the-Trainer certification.
  • Valid Alberta Class 2 driver's license with a Q endorsement.
  • Experience delivering classroom and practical driver training.



Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills

  • Excellent instructional, mentoring, and presentation skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and training-related software.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping capabilities.
  • Able to operate office and school bus equipment efficiently.

Knowledge

  • Alberta Transportation regulations and Class 2 licensing procedures.
  • Defensive driving techniques, safety standards, and vehicle inspection protocols.
  • Familiarity with the Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code relevant to student transport.
  • Awareness of bus maintenance practices and hazard prevention.

Abilities

  • Schedule and prioritize activities independently.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and trainees.
  • Problem-solve in dynamic environments and make informed decisions.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Physically able to perform bus operation and light lifting tasks (some crawling, kneeling, stooping may be required).



Working Conditions

  • 40% sitting, 35% walking, 25% standing.
  • Moderate exposure to physical risk or adverse conditions.
  • Work may involve travel, on-site supervision, and occasional weekends.



Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Additional coursework related to adult education, safety training, or transportation is preferred.
