We are seeking an individual in Western Canada to fill the position of Environment Senior Manager to support the three Pulp and Tissue Paper Excellence mills in British Colombia and Saskatchewan.

This position is mostly remote and reports to the VP Environment position in the Pulp and Tissue Business Unit. The position will require travel from time to time to the three mills.

Job Summary:
The Western Environmental Senior Manager, plays a critical role in engaging, collaborating and communicating with internal and external stakeholders for the Pulp and Tissue Business Unit to meet current and emerging environmental regulatory and stakeholder requirements.

The Senior Manager will conduct technical environmental analyses to support Business Unit and Company strategy, goals, and objectives. In addition, the Senior Manager will support the manufacturing facilities in working through environmental operational and regulatory issues as needed. The Senior Manager will coordinate with environmental staff in other Business Units to ensure a consistent and coordinated approach in development of company policies, expectations, and timelines.

The Senior Manager will also monitor emerging Canadian federal and BC\SK provincial regulatory activities and communicate areas of concern to relevant internal stakeholders and develop strategies for responding to agency actions and collaborate with manufacturing facilities to develop cost-effective compliance strategies (including capex spending).

The Senior Manager will also coordinate the environmental audit program, for his site, to ensure facilities comply with environmental regulatory and other legal obligations and requirements.

Finally, the Senior Manager will support the sites to ensure adequate provision for Environmental Liability and Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) and provide technical input on remediation when required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support manufacturing facilities in working through environmental operational and regulatory issues, including permitting
  • Manage the environmental compliance and better practices audit program
  • Monitor, communicate, and assess impact of emerging Canadian federal and BC\SK provincial environmental regulations and work with internal and external stakeholders to respond to regulatory developments and support facilities in developing cost-effective compliance plans
  • Conduct technical environmental analyses to support Business Unit and Company strategy, goals, and objectives (including KPI management)
  • Coordinate shared environmental services with other company Business Units

Your profile:

  • Safety-first mentality
  • University degree in environmental policy, environmental science or engineering, chemical engineering, or related field
  • Seven or more years of experience in one or more of the following roles: environmental compliance, engineering, and/or regulatory development
  • Experience in manufacturing, environmental, energy, forest products or chemical management issues
  • Experience in multi-jurisdictional government relations
  • Experience working in fast-paced and continuously evolving environment with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to implement change, doing things differently and challenging the status quo
  • Interpersonal and strong leadership skills
  • Fluency in French considered an asset
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to travel ~ 30% of time
  • Ability to work nights or weekends as needed
