QUALIFICATIONS
* Post-Secondary degree in a relevant field (Occupational Therapy, Kinesiology, Physiotherapy, Athletic Therapy)
* Professional training in ergonomics
* Eligible for and maintains licensure to practice with applicable regulatory body in the province of Manitoba
* Minimum two (2) years equivalent full time related work experience within the last five (5) years
* Previous experience working in an Occupational Health & Safety setting
* Other combinations of education and experience may be considered
* Province of Manitoba Class 5 Drivers Licence, and access to a personal vehicle to provide service within the Prairie Mountain Health
* Proficiency with Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), as well as Internet applications and other Information Technology
* Demonstrated leadership and supervisory ability
* Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
* Demonstrated experience in employee and labour relations
* Demonstrated experience in initiating changes and improvements, including skills in workplace re-engineering within a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) environment

POSITION SUMMARY

The Injury Prevention Coordinator is involved in managing and administering a program to prevent and reduce the effect of injury related to task and workstation design, client handling and movement, and manual handing and movement within legal and professional parameters. As an integral part of the region’s Workplace Safety & Health program, the Injury Prevention Coordinator is directly involved in the development of policy, injury prevention standards, initiatives and training programs to meet the needs of employees; providing ergonomic assessments, consultations and recommendations; and collaborating and consulting with various groups on matters related to musculoskeletal injuries and injury prevention. The Injury Prevention Coordinator provides support and assistance to the Prairie Mountain Health Ability Management program acting as a resource to the program in developing and applying return to work scenarios as applicable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overview:

General

  1. Demonstrates and maintains clinical expertise in the area of ergonomic principals relating to individualized client care needs, safe handling and movement applicable to the program.
  2. Establishes early injury prevention/musculoskeletal injury prevention initiatives.
  3. Demonstrates effective problem-solving skills in non-standardized environments.
  4. Participates in the development, design, data collection and preparation of reports and statistics for site, program and regional use as applicable.

    Safe Client Handling/Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention
  5. Participates in the development and review of policies and procedures related to injury prevention initiatives.
  6. Participates in the development, implementation and delivery of training programs for staff related to musculoskeletal injury prevention.
  7. Participates in the development, implementation and maintenance of an ergonomics program including Safe Client Handling and Safe Manual Material Handling under the mandate of the Workplace Safety & Health program.
  8. Evaluates impact of training programs and other safe handling movements recommendations
  9. Participates in implementation of training programs through maintenance of documentation and reporting processes, ordering supplies, and scheduling of classes/ attendance.
  10. Identifies training/education needs of staff pertaining to safe lifts and transfers, both client and materiel.
  11. Establishes educational priorities, implements training programs and participatory methods of learning for participants.
  12. Develops and implements standardized, evidence based guidelines and tools for recognizing, assessing and controlling ergonomic risks that can result in musculoskeletal injuries in healthcare workers for the region.
  13. Develops and implements site based orientation and training sessions.
  14. Participates in the development and implementation of effective program monitoring and evaluation tools.

    Ergonomic Assessments
  15. Performs ergonomic consultations as requested with a report that contain written, evidence-based recommendations.
  16. Assists with other rehabilitation services related to staff injuries and ergonomic assessments when applicable.

    Physical Demands Analysis
  17. Assesses job functions; develops and maintains Physical Demand Analysis reports for each position within Prairie Mountain Health.

    Ability Management
  18. Participates as a resource in the Ability Management Program assisting Human Resource Consultants in facilitating the return to work of injured/ill workers:
    • Assists with the identification and implementation of suitable work projects and determines physical suitability of work projects for site based and transitional work projects.
    • Assists supervisors/managers in assigning appropriate work duties to injured/ill workers as required.
    • Assists in determining the workers readiness to reintegrate back to regular work duties as required.
    • Provides technical expertise on physical rehabilitation issues.
    • Educates injured and ill workers in ergonomic principles and safe working procedures relevant to their job duties particularly safe patient handling and manual materials handling techniques.
    • Participates as required as a team member when the Return to Work Program is being developed and attends return to work planning meetings as required.
    • Provides input related to updated information received from health care provider(s) regarding employee’s abilities and restriction compared to the Physical Demands Analysis report for the various positions or the determination of modified return to work program.
  19. Participates as a member of the Prairie Mountain Health Workplace Safety & Health team.
  20. Other duties as assigned.
