International Tax Associate Director

A carreer as an Associate Director in the financial resource management team at National Bank means being an International Tax Specialist. You act as an expert in the review processes and provide guidance related to withholding tax for dividends, corporate actions, financial transaction tax, capital gains, tax reclaims, and tax documentation related to multiple international jurisdictions and custodians.

As a tax business specialist, you will develop a close relationship with Financial Markets operations and with Financial Markets business lines involved with securities trading. They will also partner with the Tax Advisory function from NBC corporate Finance to address and mitigate risks associated with operational processes prompting for tax advice.

The role will span over Financial Markets and Wealth Management areas as needed.

Your job

  • Provide guidance to the Operational Tax Reclaim team, and to the Corporate Action team
  • Map and maintain Tax Documentation requirements with NBC group’s Custodial and Tri-Party platforms
  • Maintain active knowledge of industry changes and trends affecting NBC businesses
  • Assess tax documentation requirements and provide related support related to new jurisdictions contemplated for custody, tri-party or bilateral trading as needed
  • Where applicable, identify risks and provide mitigating solutions with processes linked to tax operations such as Withholding Tax/FTT/Stamp Duty/Capital Gains Tax and related reporting
  • Act as a subject matter expert while interacting with the New Products and Activities groups, Operations, and selected business areas
  • Actively participate in select business or regulatory initiatives

Your team

The Financial Resource Management team works closely with Financial Markets traders and business heads, advising on optimal allocation of financial resources. It oversees business development and assesses related regulatory and tax operations processes for efficiencies. It also secures the delivery of critical regulatory projects affecting Financial Markets and as needed, Wealth Management. 

You will report to the Managing Director, Financial Resource Management, Optimization and Regulatory-Tax.

This position can be based in Montreal, Toronto, New York City or London (UK).

Prerequisite

  • A degree in business, finance, tax, accounting, or another complementary discipline with relevant exposure to capital markets
  • Minimum of 5 years in an international tax operations environment
  • EMEA tax exposure
  • Demonstrated problem-solving mindset, collaborative approach and strong desire to learn
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships with various business functions across Financial Markets and Wealth Management
  • Self-starter who can work under their own initiative
