Public Works and Infrastructure

Located in the MRC des Pays-d’en-Haut, the Municipality of Morin-Heights has nearly 4,900 residents and covers an area of almost 60 km2 in a rapidly developing region.

The Municipality has approximately thirty dynamic, passionate and dedicated employees serving its residents. The Public Works and Infrastructure Department provides technical support for various projects and for the implementation of departmental operations.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the authority and supervision of the Parks and Buildings Foreman and the Director of Public Works, the municipal carpenter uses vehicles and specialized equipment to carry out various construction, repair, alteration and preventive maintenance work on municipal buildings, parks, infrastructure and street furniture.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintenance and repair of municipal buildings

  • Install, repair and maintain the interior and exterior structures (walls, floors, ceilings and roofs) of the town hall, fire station, library, municipal garage and community centres;
  • Maintain, paint, decorate and perform minor repairs to municipal buildings;
  • Install and adjust doors, windows, hardware (locks and door closers), and floor or wall coverings;
  • Build interior partitions (drywall, wood framing or light-gauge steel framing);

  • Interior layout and furniture

  • Build, assemble, modify or repair office furniture, reception counters, shelving and custom cabinets;
  • Install systems for suspended ceilings and movable partitions;
  • Handle equipment, tools, furniture and all other materials;
  • Perform various building-maintenance tasks in related trades such as locksmithing, glazing and cabinetmaking;

  • Outdoor infrastructure and parks

  • Build and repair outdoor wooden structures such as decks, walkways, park play structures and fences;
  • Maintain street furniture (park benches, picnic tables, and tourism or community signs);
  • Install, remove and store street furniture such as benches, waste bins and similar items in parks and at various locations;

  • General safety operations

  • Safely use hand and power tools (circular saws, table saws, etc.);
  • Estimate the materials required for projects and order the necessary supplies;
  • Strictly comply with occupational health and safety standards (CNESST);
  • Participate in emergency operations or in preparations for special municipal events (setting up stages, booths, etc.);

  • Other:

  • Perform any other duties closely related to the position, as requested by the supervisor;
  • Manually remove snow on occasion around various municipal buildings;

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High school diploma;
  • Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) in carpentry (preferred);
  • General construction-site health and safety card.

Other qualifications:

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence (an asset);
  • Functional bilingualism;

Personal qualities:

  • Team spirit and courtesy (the carpenter sometimes works in the presence of residents or employees);
  • Versatility, autonomy, sound judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision;

Physical fitness:

  • Good physical stamina (ability to lift loads of 25 kg or more and to work at heights or in uncomfortable positions);

Experience:

  • Generally two to five years of relevant experience in construction or building maintenance;
  • Good knowledge of preventive techniques, practices and methods;

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Working conditions, benefits and compensation are governed by the collective agreement currently in force. For 2026, the rate is $36.39 per hour for a 40-hour work week, indexed in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement;
  • Permanent position;
