REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
This Physician role is accountable to the Chief, Department of Pathology.
APPOINTMENT
The Pathologist is appointed by the Department Chief for terms which may be specified in the Hospital Bylaws.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Pathologist will work in collaboration with the other members of the Department of Pathology to perform all professional duties in the area of Histopathology and Cytopathology.
RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
The Physician must demonstrate the following competencies:
  • The pathologist’s responsibilities include making diagnosis in a timely manner on tissues using appropriate resources
  • Learn and utilize digital pathology tools for primary diagnostic work, frozen section coverage and consultation.
  • Abide by medical staff by-laws and medical staff rules of the Hospital and the Public Hospital Act and other applicable legislation
  • Comply with scheduling structures established by the Chief or designate to ensure that Hospital services are covered 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Be available for consultation with professional colleagues and attend staff and departmental meetings within the Hospital
  • Investigations of problems and complaints from medical staff regarding the Laboratory Services and ensure corrective actions if required
  • Perform such duties and services as may be reasonably assigned by the Chief of Laboratory Medicine/Medical Director
  • Comply with intradepartmental rules
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to ensure appropriate resource utilization and optimal patient care;
  • Demonstrating understanding of, compliance with, and commitment to, patient safety responsibilities and corresponding program plans, policies and procedures in order to ensure a safe environment for patients.

Education/Certification/Licenses
  • Medical degree approved by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) required.
  • Must have qualification in a specialty of Laboratory Medicine as recognized by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or equivalent qualifications as recognized by the Provincial Licensing Body required.
  • Sub-specialization training in Hematopathology is considered an asset.
  • Canadian Medical Protection Association
  • Ontario Medical Association (OMA)
