Applications are invited for a full-time permanent Clinical Biochemist position in the head office in Toronto, Ontario. The successful candidate will have a home base at the Reference Laboratory at 100 International Blvd., Toronto, reporting to the Discipline Head, High Volume Chemistry. The candidate may also have professional responsibilities spanning other provincial testing locations. The hiring range has been established; however, the final salary recommendation will be determined based on the level of experience, education requirement, external market conditions and internal equity. 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide expertise in developing and monitoring quality systems for LifeLabs Ontario Chemistry laboratories
  • Maintain high standards of quality through auditing performance in internal and external quality assurance programs, identifying root causes and corrective actions for unacceptable performance
  • Provide leadership and advice in implementation of new or revised test guidelines and protocols
  • Consult with physicians and other health care providers regarding appropriate selection and interpretation of laboratory tests for their patients
  • Support interpretation of selected chemistry tests, including serum and urine protein electrophoresis and mass-spectrometry-based tests
  • Provide leadership and recommendations on technology selection and support in development of business cases for capital equipment purchases
  • Provide leadership in the evaluation, implementation, and support of new technologies, including lab-developed tests
  • Act as an internal resource for medical scientific, technologist and support staff
  • Advise on staff training, review technologist competency programs and the need for staff training
  • Provide educational seminars to staff
  • Collaborate with medical, operational, and quality and regulatory affairs staff to support quality improvement, maintain accreditation standards, and ensure standardization across laboratories where possible
  • Work closely with external partners, such as health authorities, to ensure quality of service within the larger provincial health landscape
  • Support business development by assisting in development of new or improved analytical procedures for production
  • Participate in internal and external academic, professional and/or administrative activities, where appropriate
  • Continually build expertise and provide leadership in particular area(s) of testing, as mutually agreed
  • Maintain professional development through a personal Continuing Medical Education program

What you will bring to the role:

  • PhD with certification (or eligible for certification) in Clinical Biochemistry by the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry and/or in Clinical Chemistry by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Common sense approach with excellent problem recognition and problem solving skills
  • Highly analytical and detail oriented
  • Leadership skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams
  • Prior experience in a multidisciplinary laboratory is preferred
  • Experience and skills in clinical informatics would be an asset
  • Project management skills and experience would be an asset

The Reference Laboratory in Toronto features state-of-the-art equipment that supports a broad menu of routine and specialized assays. The laboratory focuses on high level of automation, including numerous pre-analytical and analytical auto-verification tools and automated data analysis and reporting. The clinical mass spectrometry facility is one of the largest in Canada, guided by a team of Laboratory Scientists and Clinical Biochemists, with diverse experience in development, validation, and quality assurance of lab-developed testing. LifeLabs is partnering with AI companies on development and validation of products to improve testing workflows and quality.
