Position Summary
Interior Health is looking for an experienced Lead, Data Standards to join our team on a full time permanent basis.
This position offers a flexible work location from within the Interior Health Region and will require occasional travel to the office in Kelowna when required.

Salary Range:
Salary range for the position is $88,990 to $127,923. Interior Health establishes salaries within the minimum and maximum of the salary range based on consideration of the qualifications, experience of the applicant, and an internal equity review of the salaries of other employees.
About the job:
In accordance with the established vision and values of the organization, the Lead, Data Standards is responsible for applying and operationalizing Interior Health’s data, metadata, interoperability, privacy, and security standards within the Data Operations department. The Lead collaborates closely with Data Governance, Data Platforms, Information Security, and Information Privacy to interpret organizational requirements and ensure their implementation across Data Operations’ pipelines, data flows, and data assets. The Lead provides day‑to‑day guidance to team members and promotes a high standard of data quality and consistency within Data Operations.
Typical duties and responsibilities:
• Operationalizes and contributes to the development of data standards within Data Operations, in alignment with enterprise standards defined by Data Governance, Data Platforms, Information Security, and Information Privacy.
• Identifies and drives data standards related to data collection initiatives and enhancements to data flows that improve efficiencies and ensure optimal data quality.
• Identifies data domains and defines critical data elements to establish quality standards to be able to identify, record, measure and report on the quality of data.
• Collaborates with Data Governance, Data Platforms, Information Security, and Information Privacy to apply organizational policies, controls, and standards across Data Operations’ data sources and pipelines.
• Manages and maintains a global data dictionary including definitions, source, usage, categorization and access available to all users as a reference, assisting with the creation and maintenance of a Metadata Management Strategy.
• Provides a standard common business vocabulary, expresses strategic requirements, outlines high-level integrated designs to meet those requirements, and aligns with enterprise strategy and related business architecture.
• Translates business requirements into technical specifications, including data streams, integrations, transformations, databases, and data warehouses.
• Collaborates to identify innovative technical advances, elevating the value of data standards.
• Evaluates data standards and governance processes and metrics for continuous improvement opportunities.
• Acts as an expert consultant for escalated issues related to applying data standards and architectural guidance within Data Operations, including SQL programming, ETL/ELT patterns, SSIS package design, and software engineering best practices.
• Supports Data Operations teams in applying data standards in ways that improve the timeliness, reliability, and consistency of reporting and analytics across Interior Health.
• Provides day‑to‑day leadership, guidance, coaching, and work coordination for team members responsible for implementing standards within Data Operations.
• In alignment with IH’s Occupational Health & Safety Program, maintain a healthy and safe work environment through complying with and implementing applicable Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, responding to requests from WSBC, identifying hazards and communicating risks, ensuring compliance with employee training, conducting effective incident investigations and implementing required corrective actions.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualfications
Education, Training, and Experience
• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Computer Engineering with completed course work in a health-related discipline, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s degree is preferred.
• Knowledge data governance practices, business and technology issues related to management of enterprise information assets and approaches related to data protection.
• Knowledge of industry leading data quality and data protection management practices.
• Experience working in a complex, computerized environment with large-scale data or project management and oversight experience.
• A minimum of five (5) years of experience in data management, linkage, analysis, interpretation, and reporting.
Skills and Abilities
• Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple technical and business teams.
• Ability to work independently and within a team environment with limited supervision, balancing multiple priorities.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, plan, and guide technical implementation activities, including the application of data standards within data pipelines, databases, and analytics environments in accordance with organizational policies and controls.
• Advanced problem‑solving and decision‑making skills, including diagnosing escalated issues in SQL, ETL/ELT, SSIS, metadata, and data quality processes.
• Experience with database management and analytical environments, including working knowledge of SQL, data modeling conventions, and modern data pipeline practices.
• Understanding of software engineering best practices such as version control, testing, code review, naming conventions, and structured release processes.
• Strong organizational and planning skills to support timely, reliable, and consistent delivery of data needed for reporting and analytics.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, including conveying technical concepts to a variety of audiences.
• Ability to function effectively in a highly dynamic, fast‑paced, and continually evolving environment.
• Ability to work with a diverse range of internal and external partners, fostering respectful and productive relationships.
• General awareness of healthcare data context, including the importance of data quality, privacy, interoperability, and health information standards.
