Job Function:

Initiate the design and development of work of a unique and complex nature relative to design, commissioning and maintenance of protection and control equipment. Collaborate with others in the various phases leading to final design, to ensure coordination of all work activities, to avoid design problems and to resolve problems/conflicting interests. Examine contracts and equipment tenders. Contribute to the resolution of field problems. Attend to the development of design standards. Serve on technical/materials committees. Provide leadership, training, and development to staff periodically assigned to assist with the work.

Job Description:

1. Provide technical leadership to staff in head office and in the field on matters relating to design, commissioning and maintenance of protection and control equipment. Initiate the design and development of work of a unique and complex nature involving state-of-the-art equipment, systems and technology as a means of meeting the protection monitoring and control needs of power system equipment. Ensure emphasis is on hardware and/or software design elements and the interface with the power system.

2. Work with others to provide the leadership and support for implementing process changes and improvements required in the protection and control functions.

3. Review existing protection and control policies, work methods, standards etc. recognizing opportunities for the introduction of new technologies and recommend changes to reduce costs and increase productivity.

4. Maintain an expert knowledge of the latest developments and technology in the field of protection control systems and propose cost-effective ways in which the Company can take advantage of these developments.

5. Assist in field work of a highly technical nature or in emergency situations. Visit field locations and participate as necessary to ensure protection and control equipment is functioning as required.

6. Review specifications, contracts and equipment tenders to ensure that they meet with the intent of the design and test requirements. Cooperate and work with supply procurement groups and with external suppliers to discuss and resolve problems of mutual concern.

7. Initiate and administer programs to ensure adequate monitoring of protection and control system performance. Monitor equipment performance and compliance with regulatory requirements; investigate problems and initiate corrective action.

8. Represent the department on internal and external technical and material committees as required.

9. Develop, prepare and deliver training courses, as assigned, on protection and control facilities.

10. Periodically, supervise staff assigned to assist on major or complex projects including the assigning of work/areas of responsibility, providing advice and guidance and ensuring accuracy and quality of output. Assist with the development of engineering staff as required.

11. Initiate and administer programs to replace or rehabilitate end of life protection and control equipment. Assist in developing and administering work annual programs and budgets.

12. This job requires incumbents to possess their Professional Engineering Ontario (PEO) License (P.ENG License) and seal to approve engineering work done by themselves or others.

13. Perform other duties as required.
