Job Function: Perform technical assignments and liaison work associated with the construction, maintenance, installation, purchase and/or sale of overhead and underground line extensions, road relocations, line betterments, recoverable work for external sources, joint-use arrangements, cogeneration agreements, water/pipeline/railway crossings and street lighting facilities. Prepare specifications and review estimates and other technical data as received from staff and/or other pertinent sources to ensure accuracy and consistency with appropriate practices, procedures, and standards. Carry out studies pertaining to protective coordination, voltage regulation and other similar undertakings associated with distribution lines planning endeavors. Utilize various power system engineering software suites and ancillary equipment to facilitate system studies as requested by P&C Planners, Distribution Planners and Field staff. Recommend improvements and revisions related to protection study results. Study impact of generation on sub-transmission and distribution systems. submit reports/correspondence to supervisor or appropriate authority for review and subsequent approval. General Accountabilities: Carry out engineering studies pertaining to distribution power system protective co-ordination, voltage regulation, short circuit analysis, connection impact assessments, DG impact analysis and other similar undertakings associated with distribution planning and/or field operations as required to minimize the extent of uncontrollable service interruption or determine the impact on existing protective co-ordination scheme station/line loading and/or expected voltage levels. Recommend measures for maintaining adequate protection of equipment and Voltage levels, as well as recommending the requirement for new power Lines or distribution stations, including the optimum location of same. Acquire, scrutinize, and calculate data to be used for engineering analysis tools, ensuring it is suitable and correct for entry. Determine applicability of the data produced from the output of the engineering analysis tools. Prepare recommendations and/ or specifications for protective co-ordination upgrades, line betterment projects in order to remedy/improve existing or future line conditions which appear inadequate/insufficient by Hydro One standards. As required, perform distribution power systems impact studies as a result of new customer loads; prepare customer load connection requirements and distribution power system recommendations to meet published specifications and codes based upon results obtained through engineering analysis, and submit to appropriate authority for review. Utilize computers, engineering software and ancillary equipment to facilitate work function. Recommend improvements, revisions and the like related to computer programs/software and related engineering tools (Integration of new Technology into the above processes); submit reports/correspondence to supervisor or appropriate authority for review and subsequent approval. Perform other duties as required. Selection Criteria Essential Knowledge: Requires a comprehensive knowledge of three-phase AC power system theory, grounding, basic economics, mathematics, computer applications and related subjects in order to successfully conduct studies involving protective co-ordination, voltage regulation and improvement techniques, lines planning studies, load determination, and to prepare specifications, and monitor/review estimates pertaining to lines work proposals. This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the successful completion of three-year course of concentrated study in an electrical engineering technology obtained in the Province of Ontario from a College of Applied Arts and Technology, Polytechnic Institute or Community College or by having the equivalent level of education and/or experience. Requires experience to have acquired sufficient exposure and understanding of practices, procedures, and terminology relevant to distribution systems, protective co-ordination, voltage regulation, distribution lines standards, work methods, techniques and estimating activities. Requires experience with 3 wire and 4 wire systems, including associated protection and control devices. Requires advanced computer skills and experience to become familiar with computer program applications and applicable systems to facilitate the preparation of studies and the generation of data. Requires on-the-job experience to become familiar with equipment, maintenance of same, manufacturers' specifications including procedures and contacts involved in line work activities A period of up to and including eight years is considered necessary to gain this experience At Hydro One we understand that the success and strength of our business rests with our people.
