ROLE

The Clinical Nurse Educator supports the organization’s mission, vision, values, HPHA Guiding Principles, and corporate quality priorities by advancing safe, evidence-based nursing practice across the organization. The Educator provides leadership in clinical education, professional development, and practice improvement to optimize patient outcomes and support regulatory compliance.

The Educator facilitates quality-driven practice change by applying effective change-management strategies, coaching and mentoring techniques, and evidence-informed education methods. The role promotes critical thinking, reflective practice, and alignment with College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) standards.

The Educator conducts ongoing learning needs assessments with nursing staff and leaders, identifying gaps and improvement opportunities based on organizational goals, clinical outcomes, regulatory requirements, and patient safety indicators. They develop, implement, and evaluate education plans and resources using adult education principles to support safe, consistent, and high-quality care.

In collaboration with Clinical Managers, Program Directors, Corporate Leads, and Team Leaders, and other organizational partners the Educator coordinates and delivers nursing orientation, transition programs, preceptor development, and ongoing professional development activities. The Educator supports the integration of best practices, new equipment or technologies, clinical documentation standards, and organizational policies into daily practice.

The Educator may be assigned specific clinical areas or specialty portfolios such as the Labour & Delivery, Postpartum, Pediatric and Special Care Nursery programs in addition to the core expectations of the role, contributing to program development, sustainability, and continuous quality improvement across the organization.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION(S)

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (BScN)
  • Current Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Recent experience within an area of a Maternal Child Program such as Labour and Delivery, Post-Partum, Paediatrics and/or Neonatal Intensive Care.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Neo-natal Resuscitation certification (Instructor preferred)
  • Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course certification (Instructor preferred)
  • Fetal Health Surveillance certification (Instructor preferred)
  • Proven commitment to evidence-based and reflective practice
  • Possess valid Ontario driver’s license and access to own transportation, some travel between sites is required

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE(S)

  • Minimum 8 years clinical experience in acute care, with demonstrated competence in relevant specialty areas
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in adult education, clinical teaching, preceptorship support, or staff development
  • Demonstrated experience in educational program design, delivery, and evaluation, applying adult learning and evidence-informed teaching strategies
  • Experience integrating RNAO Best Practice Guidelines, quality improvement methods, and evidence-based practice into clinical education (e.g. ORNAC standards)
  • Experience facilitating change management, including conflict resolution, crucial conversations, and team coaching
  • Demonstrated ability to use diverse learning modalities, simulation, and technology-enabled education
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and reflective practice
  • Strong understanding of the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) and CNO practice standards
  • Strong knowledge of adult learning principles, instructional design, and education best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse learners, adapting education to varying learning styles and professional backgrounds.
  • Proficiency with digital learning platforms, clinical applications, and technology-enhanced teaching tools.
  • Exceptional communication, facilitation, interpersonal, conflict management, and team-building skills.
  • Strong ability to assess learning needs, develop education plans, and evaluate outcomes related to clinical practice, quality improvement, and patient safety.
  • Self-directed, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities, competing deadlines, and shifting organizational needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to model and promote HPHA values, professionalism, and positive internal and external relationships.
  • Commitment to Interprofessional Practice, Collaborative Care Models, and Person- and Family-Centred Care.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • CNO standards and guidelines
    • RNAO Best Practice Guidelines and knowledge translation strategies
    • Accreditation Canada standards
    • Evidence-informed clinical practice
    • Quality, Safety, and Risk Management principles
    • Change management frameworks (e.g., Kotter, ADKAR) and ability to act as a change agent
    • Project management and continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., PDSA, Lean principles)
  • Act as an HPHA ambassador and promote positive public relations with both internal and external partners
  • Flexibility in work hours and assignments

DESIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE(S) & EDUCATION

  • Master’s degree in Nursing field (MScN), Education, Quality Improvement or related
  • Lean Yellow Belt or Project Management Certification from an accredited program
  • Canadian Nurses Association (C.N.A.) specialty certification
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
