Right now we’re looking for a Registered Psychiatric Nurse to work in the Emergency Department to support patients presenting in crisis with MH and Addiction concerns.

Position Overview:

In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team within a fast paced environment, the incumbent will provide comprehensive psychiatric nursing assessments and consultation to determine the appropriate treatment needs and disposition of individuals presenting in the Emergency Department. The Registered Nurse will deliver patient/family centered care with an emphasis on assessment, education, prevention, maintenance, and restoration of health in a supportive and culturally sensitive manner.

Reporting Relationship:  Mental Health EPU management.Location: Wilson Site - Emergency DepartmentHours of work: Day/Night shift Monday to Sunday, 0730 -1930 hrs ( TDs )  and 1930 to 0730 hrs ( TNs ) Employee Group: ONAHiring Salary Range: $39.07 - $56.00

 

 Responsibilities:

  • Working within the MH and Emergency team, the Registered Psychiatric Nurse will provide mental health expertise in comprehensive crisis assessment, care planning, crisis intervention and evaluation within the Emergency Department.
  • Provides support and mental health care to emergency patients and families presenting to the ED with mental health complaints or emotional crisis.
  • Provides consultation and support to the ED Physician, ED Resource Nurse and staff. Collaborates with the Psychiatrist on-call, in the plan of care and disposition of the patient.
  • Provides support and clinical expertise to the ED staff in de-escalation techniques
  • Collaborates with the ED Social Workers and Geriatric Emergency Management (GEM) nurses as needed for discharge planning
  • Collaborates with the dedicated Security Guard in ED to support patient and staff safety
  • Collaborates with the Mental Health & Addictions Inpatient units and EPU to expedite the flow of admitted patients
  • Facilitates discharge through collaboration with community support services for patients discharged from the ED.
  • Collaborates with the Emergency Psychiatric Unit (EPU) team in the flow of patients from ED to EPU.
  • Monitors the flow of psychiatric patients on the ED and EPU Trackers
  • Attends to all Code Whites in both the ED and EPU
  • Collaborates with the ED Resource Nurse to support other nursing duties when there are no mental health patients in the ER

Requirements:

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario. 
  • Current BCLS/CPR certification.
  • Venipuncture skills required.
  • Minimum 3 years recent experience as a psychiatric nurse
  • BScN required
  • Certification in Crisis Intervention by Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), required
  • Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) certification in Psychiatry - Mental Health Nursing, required
  • Demonstrated Nursing competence in critical decision making involving patient triage, assessment, treatment and disposition.
  • Outstanding professional interpersonal skills, including the ability to be assertive.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team in a stressful and fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with community resources and their mechanisms of access.
  • Working knowledge of the network of the inpatient services and community-based resources for children and adults with mental health needs, required

Skills Required:

  • Clinical competencies to manage patients with a variety of mental health conditions across the life span
  • Expertise in providing individual counselling and risk assessments
  • Ability to use critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to conduct comprehensive assessments and consultations for mental health patients of all ages presenting in the ED
  • Ability to organize patient care demands and to set priorities
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with all members of the health-care team including patients and families
  • Excellent communication, public relations and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated and ongoing commitment to professional development
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner
