Reporting to the Director, Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness, the Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) supports a safe and healthy work environment for all individuals working at Humber River Health, including staff, physicians, volunteers, students, and affiliates.

The OHN plays a key clinical and advisory role by conducting health surveillance, supporting communicable disease and outbreak management, coordinating occupational exposure follow-up, performing pre-placement assessments, and delivering health promotion education.

In addition, the OHN supports daily operations within the Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness Clinic and ensures adherence to the Public Hospitals Act, OHA/OMA Guidelines, internal hospital policies, and regulatory requirements.

Salary Range: $85,379.33 -106,793.95

 

 

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Perform pre‑placement health reviews, including administering required immunizations and validating immunization status in accordance with the Public Hospitals Act and OHA/OMA Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols.
  • Maintain ongoing surveillance (i.e., TB surveillance) of employee immunization status and ensure compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide first aid and timely clinical intervention to support prevention, early care, and safe return to regular duties.
  • Conduct communicable disease follow-up for staff, including respiratory, enteric, and other infectious illnesses.
  • Support organizational outbreak management by working in close collaboration with IPAC
  • Prepare, analyze, and submit occupational health surveillance reports to Toronto Public Health and external regulators, as required.
  • Manage blood-borne pathogen exposures and other occupational exposures in alignment with legislation, medical directives, and internal policies.
  • Coordinate post-exposure prophylaxis, laboratory testing, documentation, and follow-up monitoring for impacted employees.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate preventative health education and wellness initiatives to promote physical, psychological, and occupational wellbeing.
  • Provide operational support to the Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness Clinic, ensuring efficient coordination, documentation, and follow-up of employee health matters.
  • Participate in needs assessments, continuous quality improvement, and development of occupational health programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain adequate first aid and clinical supplies and ensure readiness for OH service delivery.
  • Supports select elements of illness/injury claims management, in collaboration with the Disability Management Team (i.e., Respiratory and GI illness claims).
  • Collaborate with the Disability Management team on the Attendance Program processes where Occupational Health support is required
  • Advise employees, managers and internal partners on occupational health requirements in accordance with legislation, Public Hospitals Act, and internal policies.
  • Promote safe work practices and contribute to overall organizational readiness and regulatory alignment.

Job Requirements

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (RN required)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required; Master’s degree in Nursing or related field preferred
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) preferred, or commitment to obtain within one year
  • Occupational Health Nurse experience preferred
  • 3-5 years acute care nursing experience required
  • Current Standard First Aid Certificate required
  • Experience with Disability Management claims adjudication processes considered an asset
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office and ability to learn occupational health systems; Parklane experience preferred
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation (Public Health, OHSA, WSIA, Human Rights Code)
  • Demonstrated skills in education, communication, conflict resolution, and health program delivery
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with diverse internal and external partners
  • Strong customer service focus with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in healthcare
