Job Description

Core Function The Counsellor provides risk assessments, mental health screens, counselling support and monitoring for patients of the Regina Community Clinic. Psychosocial education and group facilitation is provided in response to patient need. Qualifications • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Psychology or Social Work • Member in good standing in the Professional Association of Psychology or the Professional Association of Social Work Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Regulations • Ability to work independently and be a team player • Clinical counselling knowledge • Group facilitation and presentation skills • Knowledge of the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of affiliated Professional Association • Knowledge of community resources • Basic computer skills Experience • Two to three years clinical counselling experience Conditions of Work The Counsellor works in a multidisciplinary environment. Hours of work include regular office hours within the Clinic’s hours of operation. Evening hours are required on occasion to accommodate groups. Key Performance Areas A. Positive and Professional Approach to Work ▪ Be positive, co-operative and have an enthusiastic attitude ▪ Communicate effectively and professionally with members, patients, clients, co-workers, and the public 4. Team Work ▪ Function as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team ▪ Take initiative and demonstrate independence as part of the team ▪ Serve on committees 5. Attendance and Punctuality ▪ Be on-time, prepared and ready for work and meetings ▪ Notify Supervisor in a timely manner of any unplanned absences from work to allow sufficient notice for arrangements to be made for back-up staff or scheduling changes as may be required ▪ Follow Association procedures and protocol re: timesheets, planned absences, vacation requests, etc. 6. Confidentiality ▪ Comply with the Association’s Confidentiality Policy ▪ Ensure the privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, client, staff and member information 7. Other Duties ▪ May participate in the interviewing process for new staff ▪ May be required to show others how to perform tasks or duties by familiarizing new employees with the work area and procedures ▪ Accept other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor or Executive Director B. Client Services 1. Appointments ▪ Book appointments for clients if Medical Steno is unavailable 2. Assessments ▪ Do an initial assessment for all clients ▪ Assess urgency and risk of harm to self or others, intervening to reduce risk ▪ Make or facilitate referrals for clients to other agencies, professionals or other community services for further assessment, treatment and/or case management where appropriate and when client problem is beyond the Counsellor’s scope of practice 3. Counselling ▪ Provide appropriate counselling services to individual clients with mental health issues ▪ Research and design innovative treatment programs to address mental health issues based on the needs of client groups ▪ Facilitate educational and group counselling sessions 4. Case Conferences ▪ Arrange client case conferences with other health care professionals as appropriate 5. Coordinate Resources ▪ Link individuals and families to agencies that may be able to offer resources. C. Community Relations and Outreach 1. Education ▪ Act as a resource to increase awareness and understanding of mental health issues as may be required. 2. Liaison ▪ Facilitate group training sessions ▪ Liaise and network with community groups and service providers 3. Advocacy ▪ Present information about mental health issues to community agencies and groups as may be appropriate ▪ Advocate for services on behalf of clients and their families D. Administration 1. Scheduling ▪ Work closely with the Medical Steno to maintain client case notes, update appointment schedule and coordinate meeting dates 2. Reports ▪ Prepare reports as required, ie. Insurance Claim 3. Case Notes ▪ Prepare progress notes for client caseload ▪ Maintain initial assessment on file ▪ Maintain case files in a secure location outside of the Clinic Health Records department F. Professional Development 1. Professional Association ▪ Be a member in good standing with Professional Association of Psychology or the Professional Association of Social Workers 2. Continuous Learning ▪ Attend relevant professional development seminars or events as appropriate ▪ Share information from professional development events with colleagues ▪ Supervise Counselling practicum students when possible
