Job Description: The Communicable Disease Supervisor works under the direction of the designated Manager and Medical Health Officer (MHO) and is responsible for the supervision of Communicable Disease and Sexual Health Public Health Nurses (PHN) and other designated Communicable Disease and Sexual Health Clinic staff. The Communicable Disease Supervisor is accountable for the coordination of public health activities to control and prevent communicable diseases. This work includes legislated responsibilities per The Public Health Officers Regulations, The Public Health Act, 1994 and The Disease Control Regulations, and policies and practices outlined in the provincial Communicable Disease Control Manual and as directed by the Ministry of Health and Saskatchewan Health Authority. They will supervise and coordinate the designated Communicable Disease and Sexual Health Clinic staff in the prevention, planning, and implementation of Communicable Disease Control and Sexual Health services within the Saskatchewan Health Authority. The Communicable Disease Supervisor coordinates the workflow between the team and will shift the staffs focused work area as the volume of investigations fluctuate across the area. The Communicable Disease and Sexual Health teams collectively provide services in the health networks related to Communicable Disease and Sexual Health. The Communicable Disease Supervisor oversees the investigations and the related follow up of reportable and non-reportable communicable diseases on a day-to-day basis working collaboratively with internal and external health care professionals/agencies/etc. The Communicable Disease Supervisor supervises and assists with the coordination of providing counseling for and point of care testing of communicable diseases for clients requesting/requiring this service. They supervise the provision of patient examinations for sexually transmitted infections and ensure that necessary treatments are carried out and under the direction of the physician/nurse practitioner, will provide specifically selected contraceptive supplies. The Communicable Disease Supervisor’s scope of practice requires an expansive knowledge base, autonomous decision-making skills, with a specialized focus on the planning of and implementation of provincial standards related to Communicable Disease and Sexual Health. Workload is variable and the ability to prioritize is an important aspect of the position and requires a high degree of confidentiality and professionalism. The Communicable Disease Supervisor shall supervise, provide or participate in Communicable Disease Control/ Sexually Transmitted/ Blood Borne Infections (CDC/STBBI) orientation, mentoring, ongoing in servicing and support to designated Communicable Disease and Sexual Health staff, including Public Health Nurses or other team members within an interdisciplinary service delivery model. Other duties required may include the supervision of harm reduction services, basic wound care/first aid, the promotion of educational programs for the public and other professionals and providing publicly funded vaccines/immunizations/medications. In addition, the Communicable Disease Supervisor will be required to navigate a complex administrative environment with varied stakeholders and decision makers. This requires excellent communication skills as well as a breadth and depth of knowledge including but not limited to, applicable electronic medical records, program structures in particular areas of the SHA. These structures include those of former health regions, more recently formed health networks, and the Ministry of Health.

Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
- Course credits in public health nursing are required
- Three (3) years experience in public health nursing, with at least 2 years experience in communicable disease/sexual health.
Other Education & Training:
- Additional supervisory experience is an asset.
- Basic Life Support Health Care Provider Certificate (BLS-HCP)
- Valid Class 5 driver's license
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Expansive knowledge of research and statistical collection concepts
- Expert knowledge of the Public Health Act, the Disease Control Regulations and relevant Saskatchewan Health directives.
- Knowledge of the Saskatchewan Communicable Disease Control Manual.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of immunization, including the Saskatchewan Immunization Manual
- Expert understanding of disease agents, disease control issues and the epidemiology of communicable diseases as well as relevant legislation and regulations, policies and guidelines.
- Utilizes epidemiological models to explain disease patterns in community health.
- Expansive knowledge of social determinants of health, community development and population health promotion concepts.
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of Panorama, including both Panorama IOM and immunization modules.
- Knowledge of various health care databases and systems, including, but not limited to eHS Viewer, Sunrise Clinical Manager, SCI.
- Demonstrates basic computer skills including email, Microsoft Word,, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Demonstrates knowledge of procedures regarding cold chain maintenance, of vaccine administration, drug interactions and adverse reactions.
- Excellent skills in oral and written communication.
- Demonstrates ability to work within a team environment.

- Skills in program planning and evaluation specifically the development of standards of care/guidelines/policies and procedures pertaining to Communicable Disease Control.
