Job Description: In an environment that supports continuous improvement and under the management of the Communicable Diseases/Sexual Health Program Nursing Manager and Supervisor, this employee provides Public Health STI Clinic services to the Community.  The employee is expected to make decisions made on sound assessments, according to accepted policies and standards of the Communicable Disease/Sexual Health Program.

Licenses

  • Valid Class 5 Saskatchewan driver's license without restrictions
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR)

Experience

  • Minimum of one year related experience in sexually transmitted infections, obtained in a clinical setting or through contact tracing.
  • Relevant work experience in infectious disease clinic, or harm reduction program working with high risk behaviors clients for a minimum of one year would be acceptable.
  • Strong knowledge of prevention, transmission and treatment of communicable diseases, particularly of sexually transmitted and blood borne diseases is required.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
  • Course credits in public health nursing are required

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Good knowledge of principles, techniques and practices governing public health nursing
  • Good knowledge of needs of healthy and unwell individuals
  • Knowledge of immunization principles, procedures, requirements and sche4duling, and reactions to vaccine.
  • Knowledge of communicable disease surveillance programs and principles of related disease control.
  • Knowledge of public health laws and regulations and Population & Public Health Services policies relating to the control of communicable diseases, including sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Ability to deal tactfully, non-judgmentally and effectively with a wide variety of clients, including those with alternate lifestyles and those with high risk behaviors, including injection and other illicit drug use and sex work.
  • Ability to acquire the skills and abilities to make extensive use of various computer programs, including but not limited to ACCURO or other electronic medical record, iPHIS, Panorama, SCI and SCM.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agencies physicians, co-workers and clients
  • Ability to perform technical nursing duties with skill and competence on site, and at outreach clinics, such as at the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre.
  • Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality.
  • Ability to make mature judgments of human behavior and to make decisions.
  • Ability to plan and carry out duties with a minimum of supervision.
  • Basic knowledge of epidemiology and epidemiological approaches to communicable disease control.
  • Knowledge of family planning, methods and counselling.
  • Knowledge of community health and social resources.
  • Ability to practice effective communication skills, written and oral.
  • Ability to provide first aid in emergency situations.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable.
  • Ability to travel when necessary including visits to hospital, community facilities and agencies and client homes.
  • Skill in maintaining and promotion of health practices through effective contacts with physicians, school students, parents, senior citizens, professional groups and community organizations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relations as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Willingness to accept supervision.
  • Willingness to grow professionally and personally.

  • Registered/eligible with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS).
  • Ability and willingness work evenings/weekends as required.
  • Education in infectious diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, is an asset.
  • Community based position provides services within PHC Regina
  • Home base for this position is: 2110 Hamilton Street (Subject to change)
  • SHA vehicle provided for work related travel
  • Will be required to successfully complete certification in sexually transmitted infections.
  • Will be required to successfully complete certification in Transportation of Dangerous Goods.
  • Will be required to have normal color vision.
