Job Description: Under the direction of the Manager, the Lactation Consultant is responsible for the enhancement of the quality of care to breast feeding families through practice, education and research. The Lactation Consultant will use a consultative approach and research findings to provide support to health care professionals as appropriate.

Education
- Graduate of an approved nursing program.
- Requires, or is in progress towards a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a recognized university of comparable degree in education/adult learning.
- Successful completion of a lactation consultant certificate upon employment, or at the earliest examination following achievement of eligibility criteria.
Experience
- Requires extensive knowledge and experience related to the clinical area of maternal-child and breast feeding difficulties.
- Experience in Adult Education preferred.
- Experience in Program/Resource Development preferred.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Articulates theory and knowledge related to client centred care and principles of adult learning.
- Demonstrates ability to develop educational programs/resources including needs assessment, planning, design, implementation and evaluation.
- Able to work independently and in a self motivated manner.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with others to coordinate and develop consistent teaching concepts involving staff and community resources.
- Demonstrates ability in teaching facilitation and group activities.
- Good communication skills (written & verbal).
- Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal/consultative relationships.
- Demonstrates ability to integrate clinical knowledge, experience and current research into activities to enhance clinical practice.

- Current lactation consultant certificate.
- Requires current registration with CRNS.
- Requires certification for life support.
