Position Summary:

 

The Mental Health Therapist Senior reports directly to the Manager. The Mental Health Therapist Senior is responsible for the day-to-day client service delivery (development, implementation, delivery and evaluation) of the Adult Mental Health and Addictions Services Programs.

 

In consultation and collaboration with the Manager, the Mental Health Therapist Senior:

  1. Provides leadership and supervision; coordinates, evaluates and provides treatment and case management services in a multidisciplinary professional team setting; co-ordinate clinical research projects; as a senior clinician provide clinical and program consultation, and professional/public education.
  2. Responsible for the ongoing assignment and scheduling of activities/work of those who report to the position
  3. Provides input into budget preparation
  4. Responsible for clinical and professional orientation of new employees to the department.
  5. Develops program planning and evaluation of adult mental health and addiction services.  The Mental Health Therapist Degree - Senior identifies program needs.

 

  1. Collaborates with other organizations involved in the delivery of adult mental health and addiction services.  These organizations include but are not limited to, educational facilities, health agencies and professional organizations.
  2. Applies theoretical knowledge needed for an effective and compassionate role in treatment, prevention and health promotion wherever addiction, or the potential for addiction, affects people’s lives.
  3. Conducts clinical case conferences, ensuring client progress and documentation.
  4. Assesses clients for mental health disorders and addiction related issues in accordance with the developmental model of recovery; Clinical Principles for Alcohol & Drug Misuse; the Motivational Assessment Process and the policies and the procedures established by Addiction Services and provide appropriate counselling services and referrals for clients.
  5.  Develops rehabilitative plans for clients.
  6. Develops public education, prevention and health promotion programs in response to client and community needs.
  7. Conducts research activities under the supervision of the Manager
  8. Conducts counselling and group therapy sessions meeting client’s needs and, in the problem, solving process (Bio-psychosocial model).

 

Clinical Leadership:

The position is required to understand the clinical theory, practice and have experience in working with the mental health substance using population.  The incumbent is responsible for creating and supporting an environment that facilitates the achievement of client care goals and the personal/professional growth and development of colleagues. Examples of clinical leadership initiatives are that the incumbent:

 

  1. Demonstrates responsible decision-making through the application of knowledge, critical thinking, and sound clinical, legal, and ethical practice.
  2. Functions as a member of the health care team by collaborating with other health care professionals
  3. Ongoing responsibility for planning and assessing treatment policies and procedures.
  4. Ensures quality of care activities are implemented.
  5. Promotes the growth and development of colleagues.  Acknowledges and utilizes the expertise of others through formal and informal consultation to ensure high quality addictions treatment.
  6. Provides education and clinical supervision to mental health clinicians.

 

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, Registered Psychiatric Nurse or other health related degree discipline in relation to counseling
  • Eligibility for Professional registration with applicable professional association
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license

 

Experience:
  • Two (2) years’ experience relevant to the required work as determined by the employer.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills.
  • A strong knowledge of the Developmental Model of Recovery, the Saskatchewan Model of Recovery Services, the Motivational Assessment Process and the Policies and Procedures established by Addiction Services.
  • Ability to accurately assess addictions and or addiction related issues and make appropriate recovery plans and referrals.
  • Individual, group and crisis management/stabilization counselling skills.
  • Ability to promote healthy lifestyles in urban and rural settings and with diverse populations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
