Job Description: The Licensed Practical Nurse administers medications as prescribed by the client’s physician and documents administration and dispensing of medication in accordance with Battlefords Treatment Centre policies and procedures.
OPERATIONAL DUTIES
Stores medications in a safe and accurate manner in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Monitors medications to ensure adequate accountability measures are taken when medications are ordered, received into the facility, administered and at change of shift. Phone the preferred pharmacy with any issues or questions in regard to client medication.
Check the Rights for safety in giving medications.
Dispenses client medication during scheduled times.
Demonstrates awareness of proper infection control practice.
LPNs are the liaison between our preferred pharmacy and Battlefords Treatment Centre. Submit new client’s prescriptions to the pharmacy for refills and initial prescriptions. Receive all medication refills and new prescriptions from the pharmacist once a week.
Communicate with the Addiction Counsellors regarding any med changes for the client during treatment.
Dead med any restricted medications from the clients or unused prescriptions.
Enter new client medication information into the database.
File medication documentation into each client file.
Attend staff meetings and any other applicable staff meetings and training.
Gather and organize medication for clients that are leaving treatment.
Acknowledge and comply with staff communication protocols.
Adhere to established Battlefords Treatment Centre policies, code of professional conduct, and code of ethics which holds all staff accountable for their behavior and professionalism.
Identify and report immediately to your supervisor any inappropriate and unethical behavior witnessed of staff or clientele.
Support the Accreditation process and adhere to all Accreditation processes and standards as per the Canadian Accreditation Council.
Travel Required: Some travel is required.
Education
Post-secondary education in addictions, social work, psychology, or related field preferred.
Licenses
- Completion of a Practical Nursing Program - typically a two-year diploma program offered at accredited colleges or technical institutes.
- Active registration with the provincial regulatory body - in Saskatchewan, this would be with the Saskatchewan Association of Licensed Practical Nurses (SALPN). Registration ensures that the nurse is authorized to practice in the province.
- Medication administration training - since the role involves dispensing, monitoring, and documenting medications, applicants must have successfully completed pharmacology and medication administration components of their nursing program.
- Certification in First Aid & CPR - usually required for front-line nursing positions.
- Continuing education/professional development - maintaining good standing with SALPN requires ongoing learning and adherence to competency requirements.
Other Education and Training
Diploma in Practical Nursing and active registration with SALPN (required).
CPR/First Aid and medication administration certification (required).
Additional/Preferred Training: addictions and mental health, cultural safety (especially Indigenous), infection control, crisis intervention, naloxone administration, and electronic health record systems.
Ongoing professional development to maintain licensure and stay current with best practices.
Competencies:
Nursing Fundamentals - medication administration, infection control, patient monitoring, and documentation.
Addictions & Mental Health - understanding of substance use disorders, withdrawal management, concurrent disorders, and harm reduction approaches.
Pharmacology - knowledge of medications commonly used in treatment, side effects, and interactions.
Cultural Safety & Indigenous Health - awareness of Indigenous traditions, healing practices, and the importance of culturally safe care.
Regulatory Standards - familiarity with SALPN standards, Canadian Accreditation Council requirements, and workplace health & safety policies.
Emergency Response - knowledge of overdose protocols, CPR/BLS, crisis intervention, and emergency procedures.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of addictions, recovery models, and best practices in treatment.
Understanding of Indigenous cultural healing practices and traditions.
Ability to assess, support, and guide clients through recovery.
Other Information:
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings, overnights, and weekends if required.
