Job Description: Under the direction of the Clinical Integration Manager and Senior Public Health Inspector or delegate, the Apprentice Public Health Inspector provides a variety of field related services including compliance inspections, sampling, monitoring, completion of surveys, development of educational material, drafting reports and specific project assignments. This position is required to spend time accompanying a certified Public Health Inspector to observe and develop skills and to meet the field training requirements of the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. The position will also conduct work independently under indirect supervision.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Enrollment in, or completion of, an academic program recognized by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.
  • Ability to learn and apply technical knowledge in the field of public health inspection/environmental health.
  • Ability to learn and apply specific public health legislation, guidelines and policy to facilities
  • Ability to complete assignments in a timely, efficient and effective manner
  • Ability to plan, schedule and utilize work/training time effectively and efficiently.

Position Responsibility:

  • The Apprentice Public Health Inspector accompanies qualified Public Health Inspectors to observe them in performance of routine duties and will be required to demonstrate a gained knowledge of application of legislation to specific facilities and the process for conducting compliance inspections in these facilities.
  • The Apprentice Public Health Inspector reviews legislation, guidelines and policy manuals and demonstrates skills in interpreting and applying legislation to a specific facility through plan review/approval process, inspection, licensing and monitoring.
  • Under the direct supervision of a qualified Public Health Inspector, the Apprentice Public Health Inspector may perform compliance inspections including sampling, monitoring or testing in facilities licensed under the Public Health Act, 1994.
  • The Apprentice Public Health Inspector is assigned specific project work that will demonstrate their ability to define goals, conduct research, identify and interpret applicable legislation or standards, monitor compliance, draft detailed reports and propose remedial action.
  • The Apprentice Public Health Inspector learns strategies for health promotion and demonstrates an understanding of determinants of health and application of health protection concept, including the harm reduction philosophy in project design.
  • The Apprentice Public Health Inspector demonstrates an ability to assess risks, document and monitor potential risk, and to develop thorough, detailed reports for Senior Public Health Inspectors, Supervisors or the Departmental Manager.
  • The Apprentice Public Health Inspector works with other Public Health Services staff and other apprentices to learn service delivery concepts in a multi-disciplinary team workplace.
  • The Public Health Inspector Trainee works with Public Health Services staff and other apprentices to complete specific tasks or projects assigned by a Supervisor or Manager.
