Therapeutic Recreationist

As a member of the Allied Health Care Team, the Therapeutic Recreationist uses specialized skills to facilitate the development of balanced and rewarding leisure lifestyles for patients recovering from acquired brain injury and stroke.  This process will be achieved through formal assessments, treatment planning, implementation, evaluation and discharge planning.

In the inpatient programs, the incumbent Therapeutic Recreationist, will collaborate with the other Therapeutic Recreationists to develop and plan programming for ABI and Stroke as well as Regional Rehabilitation TR events.

In the patient and family resource centre the Therapeutic Recreationist will use their skills to help patients and families continue their recovery by supporting community re-integration.   This could include connecting multiple populations of patients with community resources and services, helping them troubleshoot accessibility and completing applications.


Qualifications

1. Applicants must have a degree or diploma in Therapeutic Recreation. Must be eligible for certification with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario.
2. Previous experience working with Acquired Brain Injury and Stroke populations within a rehabilitation setting preferred.
3. Current First Aid and CPR Certification.
4. Demonstrated time management, interpersonal and computer skills (including the ability to effectively search for needed resources both internal and external to HHS).
5. Demonstrated ability to be adaptable, creative and innovative.
6. Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.
7. Demonstrated ability to function effectively as a member of the team.
8. Demonstrated ability to problem solve with team members in a professional manner.
9. Demonstrated knowledge of community agencies that support patients living with chronic conditions/disabilities and an ability to foster relationships with these groups.
10. Demonstrated ability to provide appropriate education to patients and families.
11. Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
12. Willingness and ability to continue to improve professional competence.
13. Willingness and ability to work flexible hours.
