Sr. Genetic Technologist

This position reports to the Manager of Genetics. Responsibilities include:
• Acting as a key resource for scheduling, monitoring workflow, and reassigning staff as necessary to meet turnaround times
• Operating and maintaining equipment including recognizing and troubleshooting failures, taking corrective action and ensuring proper documentation
• Coordinating proficiency testing within the department
• Participation in internal quality committees
• Coordinating implementation of new methodology/technology and necessary validation as per guidelines
• Acting as a key resource to technical staff, technical specialist, laboratory manager and professional staff on technical operation and theory of testing and results
• Participation in critical review of key indicators, incidents, audits and inspections (internal and external)
• Performs staff competency assessments
• Participates in continuous improvement opportunities and problem solving initiatives
• Lab leadership; teaching, training and mentoring colleagues
In addition, the Genetics Senior Technologist will display courtesy and tact with peers, patients, the public and other hospital staff.

 


Qualifications

• Member in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO), registered in Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics
• Current (minimum 5 years) experience in Clinical Genetics Laboratory
• Combined working experience in both Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics an asset
• Extensive knowledge and advanced technical expertise in Clinical Genetics practices including related Quality Control and Quality Assurance
• Demonstrated evidence of leadership skills and issue management
• Demonstrated excellence in communication, organizational, and problem solving skills
• Demonstrated evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster a team environment
• Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and contribution to education and development of students and co-workers
• Demonstrated advanced knowledge and troubleshooting of Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics processes and interpretation
• Demonstrated knowledge of the HRLMP Quality Management System and Accreditation Canada Diagnostics laboratory accreditation practices
